@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id

not called Brad but rather a lad, from Bradford in the UK.

Enjoys breaking apps, escooters, spam rings and sometimes bones, but not my own. That sucks.

I was going for illegal drug shortages at first from the title, and then that made me ponder the efficiency of the legal trade routes Vs illegal.

I’m lost. Why is this ruining Android?

I’m just waiting for everything they haven’t killed to merge onto YouTube

Me and ye both.

Using the “website” YouTube in my mobile browser sucks and I have to disable their “app” because it’s a system app for some reason or other, to then allow me to use a better app like Newpipe without their system app popping up in the share menu every time I get an update.

Speaking of updates my Xiaomi just updated to A14, and even thou I have Chrome disabled I now get this…

If you’ve got decent throughput at home buying a rasp pi 3/4 means you can have your own VPN

DIY enthusiasts rejoice! You can now try to attach 80KG+ to your wall. Above [your bath]https://lemdro.id/pictrs/image/ddb09eaa-711d-4914-a0e4-776ec448cc57.jpeg even, all in relative harmony!

Things won’t go wrong, promise.

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you’d love alternatives for?

I had to leave VirginMoney because the lady on the phone told me I needed an iPhone to reset my password (seriously) even after trying with three separate Android devices.

There’s no desktop functionality (mobile is king with them) and it amazed me that day I had to use the Current Account Switcher to go to an equally meh banking service.

Sorry state of affairs across all mobile apps to be honest and as seen by the prevalence of MDM and accessing data Vs doing the very same, on a desktop “PC”. Why the data is more precious on a mobile device to them is telling…

I simply use Tailscale and a family members router / AP which take SDcards to have a backup of my onsite backup, off site.

And then use Mega + Proton drive for backing up the really important things so things are in three (four if you include my phones photo storage) separate places.

Never again am I falling to disks failing, and paying so much to the cloud peeps kinda irks me especially when they can just shut up shop like UbuntuOne did.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Having a Rasp Pi 3/4 with Tailscale installed made it idiot proof for me.

Hell, I gave a spare pi to a family member which means I have off site storage and also get to VPN straight into their network to help them out (they technophobes and have no idea what’s happening). If I can do it, you can.

SMB Syncing is fun ;)

You’re absolutely spot on, and it’s evidenced by house prices here in the UK where they’re next to or near a rail line.

They are noisy fuggers and people do not like living by them.

The thing you’re not accounting for is that work that primarily involves thought, which is what “office drones” are doing

Found the office drone.

Our office drones are not “thinking” for half the day like you, and input and manipulate data. You could also include half these “managers” too who sit in an office sending emails all day, and never hit the shop floor.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I once worked in an office doing what I described above.

I absolutely hated it stuck in a cubicle, and now work outside with lots of other people grafting, instead of listening to gossiping over the cubicles all day long. Think I lasted 2 months.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I know exactly what those emails are because I have to deal with them asking me if a wagon that I’m looking at has arrived yet.

So I email them back telling them that it’s arrived (they knew that already because goods-in already updated the checking in sheet) and they get to validate their job somehow by asking me, shit.

It’s quite amazing how they keep their jobs.

@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

The old; how do you know someone is a software developer? Yup, they tell ya!

I think I really touched a nerve with that guy though, and it seems like they want to be an office drone instead of working from home (this is the bit where the “senior software devs + team manager” argue they need to collaborate, in person) with a nice life balance.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I have direct experience with the management that only work days since I work continental hours, so get to see how we run during the night without them.

Like I said, half is probably a number we could run with at my place. Sorry state of affairs.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Well, maybe your workplace wouldn’t put up with these people but I can confirm that besides them not being able to use SAP to check the quantity of a BOM, to like I said - they have access to the other functions / data but prefer to delegate them to others.

So it ends up going down a hierarchy until someone else does what these managers could do themselves in the first instance.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Nah, I wouldn’t want to become an office drone because I’d go from calling people on the internet liars to then trying to give others career advice when they don’t even know 2% of my job.

Hilarious, the self-righteousness must come from being an office drone, right?

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

My immediate manager is fine and like I said above, half of their managers could be given the chopping block but that doesn’t mean I need to find new employment as you suggest. I quite like my job since I can walk it there, work outside all day with wonderful views even if the weather does get a bit poop sometimes.

In fact it tells me you’re relatively sheltered with experience in workplaces if you think most places don’t have lazy ass managers, office drones (I like this term), and good luck asking if they even have them during an interview.

All you need to do is pay a bit extra.

Like I said in another comment in here, I find it odd that we need/want to pay more for things that don’t actually cost that more but do because some companies can’t run the books right (ie: fat cats and excessive profits) and end up with massive corps having to submit a First Gazette Notice.

I had no idea what that meant since I found out last night my company I work for here in the UK, has done just that :/

Being a consumer means I don’t attribute others ethics, nor ideology, when making a buying decision.

I buy things because I’m a consumer of goods that tries to save myself from having to spend more, to line others greedy pockets though.

If those are my ethics, call me a dirty consumer perhaps? But people getting paid minimum wages whilst people who do nothing other than tell their sales department to up their price “just because” it doesn’t come from a certain geography is like chopping your nose off to spite your face IMO.

edit: I found a perfect example of this. Berghaus fleece Vs a Amazon basics, or hell, even a Regatta fleece. Just the badge, and nothing else.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Absolutely!

And when you have a finite amount of money / time left on this planet I uphold my values of buying the best bang for buck.

Whether that’s my Xiaomi router, phone, scooter, or even the cheapo Amazon basics fleece the first thing I do is look at the price and not if it comes from a country that others don’t like.

I figured out how to make IPTV as easy as using Netflix so you dont have to (lemmy.myserv.one)

Disclaimer: Obviously this is for educational purposes only. I would personally never use my internet connection for anything illegal at all. I simply tested the below setup then deleted everything out of pure interest to understand how things worked and do not use any IPTV service. I love paying Netflix and other streaming...

I prerecord like a minute ahead of the show starting and sound / video are both well.

But what happens is the audio mutes as soon as the starting credits roll. I don’t exactly get how they’re doing it since my TV’s DVB receiver plays it just fine.

I checked my HD recording of the new Attenborough Mammals show, and that did have audio so I’ll have to keep an eye ear out for it happening again.
