“That is a danger to our democracy”

partial_accumen,

Just hoping now another January 6th situation doesn’t happen as a follow up.

If it happens it happens. We can’t suspend justice because of the fear of a misguided mob.

partial_accumen,

China is avoiding settling payments with Russian for months because of US heat in the banking sector. China doesn’t want to get cut off, and we’re pressuring them to choose between banking with Russia or banking with the rest of the world. This has had a serious effect and Russia is now settling transactions in Bitcoin for the first time officially. Thats some great pressure if Russia’s biggest ally is so concerned about taking Russian money they’re not doing so.

partial_accumen,

I learned about it from an article here on Lemmy:

lemmy.world/post/15913152

and here:

lemmy.world/post/13770119

The lemmy link for this one doesn’t work now for some reason but here’s the article it was pointing to.

Russia struggles to collect oil payments as China, UAE …

Trump (in his first term) was the lessor of two evils?

partial_accumen,

More specifically: Trump has never won the popular vote for President.

State Department official resigns after Biden administration says Israel not blocking Gaza aid (www.middleeasteye.net)

A career State Department official resigned from her post on Tuesday, saying she could no longer work for the Biden administration after it released a report concluding that Israel was not preventing the flow of aid to Gaza....

partial_accumen,

There’s no reasonable moral ground for enabling genocide.

Geopolitics is rarely ever moral.

partial_accumen,

If you want Trump to lose, its not going to be with Biden.

…again. Trump has already lost to Biden once in 2020. If anything Biden has a 100% track record of beating Trump in presidential elections. Trump has a 100% loss rate against Biden in Presidential elections.

partial_accumen,

Biden wasn’t supporting a genocide of the Palestinian people in 2020.

Trump is also a supporter of Israel. Trump (and GOP lawmakers) actively criticized Biden for stopping delivery of weapons to Israel. So Trump comes out looking no better than Biden on Gaza.

Things are different for incumbents than they are for challengers, especially those without a recent track record.

Biden was in the Executive Branch for VP for 8 years and was in the US Senate for 36 years. Trump has 4 years as an twice impeached President.

Its over. Biden loses. He can’t make up that kind of polling deficit.

Thats funny, that’s what people said in Hilary’s favor, and then Trump won. So which is it?

partial_accumen,

You might consider that those were the same people who have been telling you to not worry about/ apologizing for Biden.

No, they’re the same people saying the polls conclude Trump is a shoe in that you are citing yourself.

partial_accumen,

So…you’re citing…yourself?

Biden showed a 12 point polling deficit to Trump in 2020, and hasn’t led (unweighted) in 15 months.

Didn’t you yourself point out that polling data analysis lead to the incorrect conclusion in 2016?

partial_accumen,

That can delay things, but ultimately it will be the US against the rest of the world and no amount of subsidies will be able to offset that.

Coal and nuke power company provider First Energy straight up bribed the Ohio Speaker of the house with $61 million to get legislation passed to force residential electricity customers to pay extra fees to subsidize unprofitable coal and nuclear power in the state. The former Speaker is in prison now. The extra fees are still being paid by customers even today. source

partial_accumen,

In Ohio this costs an average residential electricity customer $95/year they have to pay extra on top of their electrical bill.

Nuclear should be ran until EOL, then ideally built back up again

Arguably it has in Ohio. In 2002 a football sized hole was discovered in the top of pressure vessel eaten away by the caustic cooling water:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/b3040cc7-a610-47f5-ba0e-ae9d907a3944.png

They bought a replacement from a mothballed nuke plant.

The plant was supposed to be EOL in 2017, but was extended to 2037.

At the same time Republican lawmakers in Ohio gave oil and gas companies full control over where wells are place, but put rules in allowing the blocking of solar and wind installations. source

partial_accumen,

The nice thing about owning a home is that you actually build up your saving.

Thats true in some countries, but not so in all countries. Ownership in some places means simply paying on the interest without any assumption about paying on the principal. A person could still make money if their property appreciates because of market conditions where they could cash out when they sell it, but there’s no guarantee on that.

partial_accumen,

We have these in the USA too. Its called an " interest-only mortgage".

that’s just renting except you also have to pay for maintenance.

Lots of things you can do here that you can’t do renting:

  • Since its you are the owner house you can make any changes you want to it
  • If the property appreciates in value because of market conditions, that’s YOUR money thats not the landlords money
  • You decide who lives in it. Landlord can’t tell you no
  • Pets if you want them
  • no security deposit
  • mortgage payment stays the same forever, this “rent” never goes up in price

All of that said, I don’t recommend interest-only mortgages in the USA because a home is one of the most accessible investments a person can have with strong legal protections keeping others from taking it from you via legal means.

partial_accumen,

“how? how this PhD professor is so happy and calm and confident”.

  • A person can be talented in a specific job area
  • A person can enjoy working a specific job area
  • There are some jobs that pay well enough to live happily on

There are people, through sheer genetic luck and general luck to be born in the right place and time in history, that they have all three.

I guess I am just a weird person

You’re not weird. I think it is rare to have all three. Even someone that has only two will likely be called “unhappy”. You are NOT to blame for not having all three. Its just luck.

partial_accumen,

She interned in fascism. It is any surprised she decided to take up a career in it?

partial_accumen,

Which shows how useless it is for the Ohio Republicans to be dragging their feet.

Dragging feet is Ohio Republicans favorite pastime:

  • School funding model ruled unconstitutional? Ohio Republicans (who hold both the legislature and Governors office) simply ignore it for literally 30 years now source
  • Republican drawn Congressional districts ruled gerrymanderred by the Ohio Supreme court requiring redrawing. Ohio Republicans simply draw another gerrymandered version, and sit on it until the election forcing a gerrymandered disctrict map to be used. And the GOP won maintaining control source
  • Republicans violate their own rule to run out-of-ban special election to try to change the rules on State Ballot Referrendum trying to make it too hard to pass with just voter efforts. source
  • After voters get a Reproductive rights constitutional amendment on the ballot, Republican Attorney General change the wording of the language to make it more inflammatory. source
  • Ohio voters successfully amended the state consitution to include the reproductive rights amendment (including legal protections to allow a woman to have an abortion) and the Republican AG is challenging nearly every part of the constitutional amendment. “He slow walks every single constitutional challenge to every single Republican statute still on the books that interferes with abortion access by erecting unnecessary government barriers between a woman and her right to an abortion.” source

No one says “I’m gonna fast this week cuz I think groceries will be cheaper next week”

They’d say instead “I’ll buy the cheap coffee instead of the good stuff and get the store brand blend of olive oil instead of the EVOO I usually like instead to hold me over until the prices fall next week. I’ll also hold off on getting steaks this week and instead get some cheap chicken thighs”.

They want to add compression to the implant?

They’re making their own silicon for their sensor so adding an on-die ASIC for a specific compression method sounds pretty attainable.

    partial_accumen,

What does this have to do with the question? Having samples of the data they want to compress is fundamental if you hope to find an algorythm to compress 200x.

There were two questions asked. I answered for part of the first question. I have no information on the second question (samples). You’re welcome to do your own googling to see if you can find an answer.

I remember amateur Russian military hardware inventory counts projected that Russia could sustain (at the time) equipment losses for 2 years. Thats when Russia was losing a couple of tanks and maybe 8 BMPs a day. I’m really curious how these regular 20+ tank/APC loss days are shortening that day when Russia will be out of equipment to much sooner.

    partial_accumen,

I’m not quite understanding what the benefit is to forcing skips to the end of the video. Having to click to the beginning of the video takes a fraction of a second which is still a better user experience than sitting through a 15 to 30 second ad.

You tell me, does European or other national health care extend to the country of Panama where the ships are frequently flagged?
