theshatterstone54,

So it IS possible, as I already found out. If the Arch wiki isn’t saying things like “doing this can break your system” then it’s fine by me.

theshatterstone54,

Okay, my concern was that if I have, say 1.4G in zram, that would unpack to, say, 2G, which, when added to 7G, would go over the 8G limit. I was worried that RAM might be saved in its uncompressed manner, when saved in the swapfile for hibernation.

I’m far from an enjoyer of snaps BUT snaps do support other custom stores and aren’t tied to the snap store, contrary to popular belief.

Also, the fix for making snap startup times has been developed and released but most existing snaps haven’t patched their snaps to support it (last I heard, the only notable exception (aka the only known snap to have good startup times) is the Firefox snap).

theshatterstone54,

When I started living by myself a while back, I realised how much random housework was being done by my parents. There’s the obvious ones like cooking, shopping and doing the dishes. But there’s also meal planning, cleaning, buying non-obvious essentials like toiletries, and more, which I wouldn’t normally think about.

Windows XP -> Windows 7 -> Windows 10 -> Linux Mint -> Manjaro -> ArcoLinux -> Arch -> Arco -> Arch -> Arco -> NixOS -> Arch -> Ubuntu (beginning of 2023) -> NixOS -> Arch -> NixOS (summer 2023) -> Debian (for a month when beginning University), -> NixOS -> Arch -> NixOS -> Fedora (in Jan/Feb 2024, seems like it could be the one) -> Void (wanted to love it but I hated my few days in it) -> Arch (temporarily, waiting for the COPR repos on Fedora to update its packages for F40) -> Fedora 40 (where I still am)

Going from Windows XP to Linux Mint took over a decade. Going from Mint to Fedora 40 took about 2 years.

theshatterstone54,

NixOS is immutable, so I can’t compile from source (I needed a specific Assembly Editor for university and it only supported full system installation, I could not get it working on NixOS). I desired a static release, so I was switching to NixOS, but then there’d be something I can’t be bothered to figure out or weird issues, so I’d switch back to Arch. But then my desire for a stable static release would return.

So on and so forth until I figured out Fedora is perfect. It lacks the 1337 Haxor feel of an advanced distro, and dnf is super slow (First thing I do on a new Fedora install now is get dnf5), AND my SDDM theme broke on Fedora but worked everywhere else (something to do with qt5-qtgraphicaleffects), but I rewrote the theme, aliased dnf to dnf5, and I still get the 1337 haxor feel by using my own scripts, including a bemenu logout script, which makes me feel like a boss when I use it, for some reason, probably because I wrote it myself.

theshatterstone54,

I think a second opinion would be best, especially for any serious diagnoses like this one.

theshatterstone54,

This is the first time I ever find myself kind of disagreeing with the Mint team. As others have said, some of the most popular packages on Flathub are unverified so popular programs like Inkscape are not going to show up as Flatpaks?

I think just a warning, like what Flathub does, and maybe a dialog before installing, warning the app is packaged by an unverified packager, would have been enough.

theshatterstone54,

Ooh, good point.

Completely unrelated but your use of FP really confused me at first, as I’ve been studying for a Programming exam, half of which is on FP (Functional Programming).

theshatterstone54,

He’s happy with it so I’m happy for him!

Interesting point, however, is that the only major issues he had were with OBS and him macro keypad, and everything else worked for him. That is a very good thing imo. It’s a testament to how far Linux has come. Now we just need to ensure all the Wayland work gets completely done across all desktops and then it’s a matter of time before even stable and “conservative” systems like Debian and Mint get it all supported, at which point Linux will be ready for all, and we can move our focus to Mobile Linux and whatever else the next new big and shiny thing is on the desktop (Personally, I think the only issues after these would be making sure accessibility is all well and good, getting GNOME to finally support VR, and that’s about it. I can’t think of anything else).

theshatterstone54,

Just in time! I’m finishing my first year of uni this week, and just added a GTK or Qt app to my TODO list for the summer. While I found myself preferring Qt over GTK, I will still save this post and hopefully come back to you in a few weeks. Cheers,

theshatterstone54,

Hey now, I promise nothing, BUT I already have a source for the recipes…

theshatterstone54,

The feature you’re referring to is called Fractional scaling. What Desktop are you using? Are you using Fedora Workstation (GNOME), Fedora KDE, or something else?

theshatterstone54,

Agreed. As a self-proclaimed Linux fan, I’m also trying to give an unbiased perspective but I still find myself presenting things as nicer than they are sometimes.

theshatterstone54,

I know that a lot of work is being done across all Wayland desktops to get this supported but I don’t fully know about the levels of support, as I don’t use a DE and I have no need for fractional scaling. From what I’ve heard, KDE Plasma supports pretty much everything now, which includes fractional scaling.

theshatterstone54,

Less than an hour a day, when I was spending all my days on that other platform back when I used that. So the switch to Lemmy was a healthy choice for me. I’ve been applying some strategies to do the same to YouTube.

theshatterstone54,

Even if that’s so, I have had many occasions where I thought that for something simple, ChatGPT could do the job. I ended up having a back and forth for hours (last case of that being yesterday) until I got it fixed. For most cases (but not yesterday’s) I found it much faster by looking it up online.

theshatterstone54,

Nice! I took the liberty of adding a few more nice-to-haves I found there. I often forget this is a thing that can be changed. Thanks!

theshatterstone54,

You don’t even have to do that, if you use a flatpak.

theshatterstone54,

I like using the terminal on video because it scares people

I like him already.

theshatterstone54,

Fedora with Hyprland, Qtile Wayland and COSMIC. I’m hoping COSMIC will be stable and featureful enough to meet all my needs by then so I can use it full time.

theshatterstone54,

I get it. For me, that’s just a nice-to-have.

theshatterstone54,

Help! I can only think of an office chair!
