I grew up in a time and place with only a handful of TV channels and no internet, and I would still sit and spend my weekends watching absolute shit rather than doing anything. I remember this particular time on Sunday when every week the best thing on was horse racing, so I’d sit and watch it for 5 minutes before checking the other channels, just to come back to horse racing.

My parents grew up before TV and I asked my Mum what they did instead. She said they were mostly just bored.

Despite all the problems the internet does make hobbies way more accessible. Nowadays if you want to learn something you can just Google it or watch a YouTube video. Before the internet you’d have to go out and buy a fucking book. Working on computers in the 90s, I used to spend days or weeks trying to fix problems that I would solve in a few minutes now.

Linux on old School Machines?

Hi all, the private school I work at has a tonne of old windows 7/8 era desktops in a student library. The place really needs upgrades but they never seem to prioritise replacing these machines. As long as you can secure them it should be fine, and as long as you can deal with the user account issues. You’ll either need to join them to your Windows domain or explain to people why they can’t use their normal username and password. You’ll probably find the kids understand it better than the teachers.

Just take the bare minimum and spend a night near your car or home, someone you can up and leave at 2am if you need to. Take a shit before you go.

There’s not really any surprises for what you need, just take a tent, sleeping bag, warm enough clothes, a little toilet paper, water and food (just take loads of cereal bars and stuff you don’t need to cook for the first time). The only other thing to take is bin bags so you can clean up any mess you make. You should leave the place you camp as if you were never there. No food on the ground, nothing. Don’t feed the animals.

If you’re feeling extravagant you can take some baby wipes and toothpaste/toothbrush for cleaning but don’t stress yourself on the first time. If you have a garden you can even camp in your garden for the first time just to get a feel for it.

I don’t know much about the tech behind either, but when I’m using VNC it feels like I’m just remote controlling the mouse and keyboard on another machine via a series of streaming jpegs and when it’s full screen I either have to scale the display so all the elements on the screen are too small or too big, or have scroll bars.

With RDP it’s so smooth it’s like I’m on the other machine. RDP doesn’t just remote control the screen on the other computer, it creates a new desktop session formatted for the remote computer. Someone else can even use the other computer while you log in as a different user. I don’t know if VNC can do this but RDP can even forward local drives and devices to the remote computer, you could plug a USB into your laptop and have it connect to the machine you’re RDPing into. It’s so seamless that I often forget I’m using a different machine when I have it in full screen.

Two things. Linux certainly does have a difficult learning curve, at least compared to Windows and OSX. I’m currently in Fedora 39 and I had to dig up some terminal commands off the internet just so I wasn’t choosing between 100% and 200% scaling. That’s just beyond the average computer user.

Secondly, I wish people could stop trying to teach everyone that Linux isn’t the OS. Anyone that cares already knows, and anyone that doesn’t know doesn’t care.

New Dad, Current Problems.

First born nipper of seven weeks is well for which I count my blessings. Fresh challenges for daddy though: I don’t have the emotional and physical comfort from my girlfriend that I had become accustomed to. Obviously, she is looking after a baby for everything she’s worth, with me right behind her. We’re breastfeeding....

This bit is tough and you kinda just have to wait it out. Lean on family if you can and try and get a few nights out together. The hardest bit about this phase is that you feel like it will never end but it does, even if it feels like ages. Ignore people who tell you this is the best bit, they’ve just got rose tinted glasses. But with each month that passes it gets less shit. Some people say it doesn’t start getting better until around six but that’s bollocks, even 1 year is ten time better than 1 month.

Some people love the baby phase but I hated it. Just remember that you don’t have to fix everything, they’ll grow out of most of the problems. Try to find other kids the same age to hang out with, that’s an easy win no matter how old they are.

If you just want to dabble and learn about OS stuff then Kali is probably the best bet. I’ve heard a lot of stuff saying that Parrot is better but Kali is the industry standard, and I’m pretty sure both of them cover the basics just as well. If you’re looking for a secure distro to use a bit and just learn about Linux then choose something else. Pen-testing (OS) distros are inherently insecure simply because they’re loaded with the kind of software you don’t want on your own machine. Part of the battle in (ethical) hacking is getting the malware onto a machine, and these are absolutely loaded with it.

That being said, I think Parrot have a distro flavour that’s simply supposed to be a secure system rather than a pen-testing tool. I haven’t tried it myself.

However, if you’re new to Linux and simply want to learn start with something easier and well supported. Kali and Parrot are both based on Debian so maybe something similar would help you. Debian or a fork, like Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

I used it around the time of Epic Fail Guy and barrel rolls. It was fun for a while but I eventually realised that it was the same jokes and content going around again and again. Then someone posted a spoiler for Bioshock and I was done with it.

As for tech answers it’s probably about as reliable as an AI. I wouldn’t expect people to generally lie to you but there would be the occasional bit of bullshit from some troll from /b/. I’m sure you’ll get abuse if people think you’re being stupid, probably worse than a Linux forum.

I wish I could just go 10 minutes without using terminal.

I always think Linux caters to people with incredibly basic requirements such as a bit of web browsing, emails, and editing a document. And it obviously caters to total nerds like the kind of people who subscribe to the Linux section of Lemmy.

However, it really doesn’t cater well to the inbetweeners who want stuff a bit more advanced than what an iPad can do, it kind of just lumps them with a huge learning curve and says “get on with it”.
