You really painted yourself in a corner with the QNAP setup unfortunately. There’s no way to migrate over to NFS without headache. Moreover, if you want to go the Docker on Linux route, you’re headed for the same headache but different. You can’t really treat iSCSI/LUN as a run of the mill filesystem (as you’ve discovered).
The issue I see is you’re virtualizing everything. Docker was essentially built to negate the OS. iSCSI virtualizes the filesystem. Doesn’t quite matter what you end up running them on really, you’re a slave to each in a sense.
I’ve always favoured running on the rails with this type of thing to maximize compatibility and limit overhead and headache when it comes to potential migration and connectivity to your NAS. Ubuntu server on ZFS running SMB gives you the broadest compatibility and today probably the best performance even on Linux. Moving to NFS doesn’t seem worth at all imo, it’s just a lateral move with a costly bill at the end.
I don’t even want to tell people I use it because of its name. I would never bring it up in a work setting in this day and age when I look at Slack and see everyone list their pronouns.
The fact they haven’t clued into this is just wild to me. A shame it throws the work of so many people under the bus.
Also, to call it after the Pulp Fiction character is insane to me. Let alone that everyone on the team signed off on it. What were the second choices? Diarrhea? Herpes? Like dafuq.
Or some edgelord trying to get people to watch 2 girls 1 cup back in the day. The scene in the movie was deeply disturbing. It actually made my partner at the time cry because she had been SAed before. Even for me, I did not enjoy and while the movie was amazing, the scene only took away from the film (I know the entire thing was hyper violent and disturbing).
I can’t even imagine referring to it let alone thinking back on it fondly. I always thought GIMP was an acronym. This news shook me because I’m actually on the contributor list.
Also, I would never admit its origin in this day and age. I’m still in shock learning this!
No one. No one remembers it fondly because it’s got a “quirky” name. That’s not how software works. People use software because it’s useful. Not because it’s edgy or has memorable branding. I would rather a competent design tool period. The name is irrelevant. We aren’t selling cookies or an energy drink. We are empowering people to get things done. You think your spoon with a hole in it is going to sell because you call it “Faggot”?
Normally I wouldn’t take comments like this to heart. But I tried the latest beta recently after maybe 15y and wow. You’re totally bang on. I was stunned how bad the UI was. How bad the app was. Upon reading this, it all just sort of makes sense.
I’m sad things are so bad on the Linux front that this is the most highly rated design tool. Linux community deserves better.
Yeah spot on. It’s pushing 30. And what’s even more wild is that a road to good UX has already been mapped out. By Sketch. By Figma. By Photoshop. By Pixelmator. By Infinity Design. The list is endless. I haven’t seen anything stay so bad. In fact when I used it some 15y ago, I felt it to have been better than it currently is. The UI was at least close to Ps, which is actually quite intuitive (or used to be around 2019).
UX is gold. I used Sketch for work (we have Macs at the studio) and then were forced to switch to Figma. Since Figma is electron, it can’t hook into the OS like Sketch can. That meant the loss of edge snapping, specifically the handles on the vector lines. I felt that tiny itty bitty little loss in my bones. It made using Figma as a whole belaboured in comparison to Sletch (which I feel is near the pinnacle of UX).
Adobe Ai is also a good example of bad UX. That app is so backwards in the way it works and so eclectic in its feature deployment that you can’t just jump into it like you can say Ps. It feels like say Blender without any 3D knowledge.
I don’t think there is. I know on macOS there’s a setting but it doesn’t work, I have it unchecked and it still lets me know 15m before a calendar event.
What if charging your phone took less time than brushing your teeth? A new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences could very well hold the key to a next-gen charger capable of recharging your phone in just 60 seconds....
Or just the tip of the iceberg of a larger, more systemic problem within the organization. Wild your default position is to assume Google is doing all the right things when we have a long history of the company being shady af and lying about it.
AIs use will never see it reach its full potential because companies are liars and deplorable entities that have historically demonstrated they will screw over everyone and everything for profits.
In another universe, AI would help people. It would tell you that you are eating too much bread. It would alert you that you do not eat enough foods in vitamin A. It would tell you that your late night habits of staying up lead to poor health. It would tell you that going to be before 12am leads to you having much better restorative sleep. It would tell you you’re sitting in one position too long. That if you left now, you’d make it 5m early. The list is endless. A machine always calculating and monitoring your status; in an effort to improve your life.
In our universe it’s going to tell you to buy Anamin’s sleep aid, now 50% off. Then track how much you take it so the company that sell you more. Or pass the data to their “partners” so they can sell you more crap.
They will likely try to leverage AI to reduce rendering like AMD. I suspect this is literally announced to show that Intel is still relevant and to prevent more bleeding from that company. They did similar when Apple dropped them. Rather than make better chips, they released a mass marketing push to show they were every bit as good as Apple silicon if not better.
Thanks for the totally made up figures. I’m glad we agree that training itself is quite costly. No data on how much energy AI will save vs rendering (as we don’t know how much we can avoid rendering; there has to be a cap) so can’t really keep riding that horse.
You’re right tho, the rail analogy sucks. Not for the reasons you list tho, but rather because they will never stop training AI. Unless you feel AI will stop learning and needing to evolve.

There is no legal risk because no one is sharing files. All they do is share information. They likely did it because they morally disagree. But then like go ahead and let companies do whatever they want, like gate games behind every single different OS. Bought SF6 for console and want to play it on PC? Go fuck yourself, buy it again. It’s wild that “piracy” is instantly bad yet whatever a company does is A-OK-USA.
LOL. Not in this case. Cheap headphones do not pay Apple a dime. And Apple can’t go after every little headphone manufacturer they have real things to deal with like entire knock off Apple Stores that push millions of dollars a month.
In this case, the answer is less insidious. It’s the batteries. These headphones have BT but no batteries, hence why they are wired (need the power).
Two reasons. One, it’s actually expensive to wire up lightning to audio. Because the connection is digital, not analogue like the headphone jack. Two Apple can detect data thru software and even disable it, leaving the headphones useless. Why would they? Because you didn’t apply for their mifi program and pay them. These headphones don’t have data, they just plug directly into power.
When monopolies exist. How everyone didn’t care for the last 25 years is even wilder. Adobe has been controlling the design communities forever *flips water bottle
Nope. The other way around, you leave macOS for Linux. Not sure why this was posted here other than Asahi is meant to run on Macs. But the software is just Linux after that.
