Americans are choking on surging fast-food prices. "I can't justify the expense," one customer says (www.cbsnews.com)

Kevin Roberts remembers when he could get a bacon cheeseburger, fries and a drink from Five Guys for $10. But that was years ago. When the Virginia high school teacher recently visited the fast-food chain, the food alone without a beverage cost double that amount....

vividspecter,

But it’s not even cheap, that’s the whole point of the article.

Why Megadonors Are Unfazed by Donald Trump’s Guilty Verdict | Money flowed into the former president’s re-election campaign from Wall Street and Silicon Valley following Thursday’s historic conviction (www.nytimes.com)

With the billionaires backing him, it’s going to be on us as individual Americans to make sure Trump doesn’t end up in the White House again. That means not just voting but talking with people around you, volunteering and donating

vividspecter,

The convincing needs to be aimed at people who don’t vote, of which there is an absurd amount, particularly among young people. Trump could be prevented if people on the left vote en masse, and perhaps even gain strong majorities in both houses.

This is thankfully only about imports so it will limit the damage, but the coming fuel efficiency standards carve out an exception too (although I believe they are more stringent than the US standards at least).

EDIT: I was under the impression the tax only applies to private imports, but it actually doesn’t. See my below comment. But it is limited to higher priced vehicles at least.

vividspecter,

It also has the same issue as the death penalty, where once the punishment is enacted, it can’t be undone based on new evidence.

Even though I don’t buy that many bandcamp albums, I do feel better about giving some obscure artist 10+ USD instead of pennies being spread amongst 1000s of artists (and much of that being sucked up by Spotify et al and major record companies).

vividspecter,

Tidal turned me off by pushing that snake oil MQA format for years, although I believe they have been moving away from it in recent years.

Even saying “Australians are racist” doesn’t mean you are claiming every single Australian is racist. A bit like “toxic masculinity” isn’t implying that every single man is toxic, or that every single masculine trait is toxic.

I think if someone wants to find the worst interpretation of a word or phrase, they are going to find it ultimately. Usually because they want to attack an idea without arguing against the substance of the idea (because they have no legitimate argument).

vividspecter,

It’s education for sure. We have very few issues with the system in Australia, which has been used for decades.

The exhaustion issue could be prevented by using full preferential instead of optional preferential (although some don’t like that because they believe it “forces” them to rank a candidate they don’t like).

New South Wales councils that meet and beat new housing targets will be given extra cash for sporting facilities, parks, footpaths and road maintenance as part of the state government’s push to build nearly 400,000 new homes over the next five years.

It seems to be more that housing is already being built but that councils can’t afford to add the supporting infrastructure, so this will help with that. But this should also help with encouraging councils to meet those housing targets, when they know they’ll get additional funding.

On closer read, I see what you mean. I think this may be the key point:

The government will set aside $200m in grants to encourage the dozens of councils with updated local housing targets to do more; money will go only to the councils that meet “key milestones”.

I assume those key milestones would not mean they’ve already met the new targets, but have shown progress on them. So councils that aren’t making a sincere effort don’t get the extra funding. Would be nice to see more detail and what the milestones are.

The joke is that it’s Bart’s birthday and he goes to a bunch of places to get free gifts, but they all suck (including this disappointing birthday sundae). The animation looks like it’s a quite early season, but I can’t remember the episode itself.

vividspecter,

It’s an intentionally dumb meme intended to make fun of right-wing idiots (and maybe get some of them to think about their views). Nobody is suggesting to completely remove every zoning restriction, but less restrictive zoning is a good idea.

vividspecter,

Even Xiaomi are getting rid of the MicroSD slot now (and the headphone jack). At least onboard storage has been starting to increase again, although it’s not close to the amount a SD slot can provide.

vividspecter,

There aren’t really any good platforms for artists.

There’s bandcamp, but it’s not really a streaming platform per se.

Near 100% since Wine isn’t a hardware emulator. But it depends on how well the software is supported, and CAD has historically been a sore point (but it may be better these days).

vividspecter,

True, although I’d say the regulation is needed nevertheless.

vividspecter,

There aren’t many viable alternatives, so I do understand it. Valve Index is probably the most free but it’s expensive and starting to become out of date. The Reverb G2 will get no further updates in 2025, and will require you to stay on an old version of Windows (and using Windows in general isn’t great from a data privacy perspective). Any of the remaining alternatives are expensive and/or very niche.

It sucks, and I hope Valve does come out with the rumoured Deckard headset, because we need something that is well supported and not tied to the whims of Facebook or Microsoft.

vividspecter,

I don’t really see this as a bad thing if we want people with lower incomes to get off ICE cars, although I can see how people who paid those prices would be annoyed. Expecting cars to hold their value or depreciate slowly seems overly optimistic in general, as they are inherently depreciating assets and should never be seen as investments.

vividspecter, (edited )

I think we should pursue it for the future, but it shouldn’t be taking funding that could be used for more immediate solutions or used as a distraction / delay tactic (although of course it will).

vividspecter,

Most of them build track cars and the like. There is certainly no mainstream car manufacturers left.
