vividspecter,

It could get delisted in the future if there were any licensing deals, although that can happen for any game. If you already own it on Steam you’ll be able to keep downloading and playing it indefinitely.

vividspecter,

On the plus side, a small amount of money can go a lot further compared to funding roads.

Anyway, good to see, and hopefully they get the details right and it isn’t just used to build a few paths and call it a day.

vividspecter,

Carbon prices and other incentives and disincentives can help accelerate this, and renewable tech and green(er) manufacturing will play into this too. I suspect (and hope) the decline in oil usage will happen well before we run low on it.

vividspecter,

Seems to be aiming for the sexual harasser crowd, as multiple of these have allegations against them.

vividspecter,

You can roughly remember it as:

  • 20 mph = 30 km/h
  • 30 mph = 50 km/h
  • 60 mph = 100 km/h

but thanks for the precise numbers.

vividspecter,

This would be restricted to city streets. If you want more speed, use the highways or bypass roads that (ideally) aren’t anywhere near residential or city areas.

And the additional speed actually slows things down on congested roads, because you need more traffic lights (among other reasons).

vividspecter,

They want their base to try and overthrow the government again if Trump loses. Claiming the result is going to be rigged constantly will make these people more willing to do that if the time comes. Their supporters don’t actually care if the media calls them out on it because they have a pathological victim complex, and Trump and the Republican party being criticised plays into that. And they don’t care about democracy anyway, they just want their guy to become an authoritarian king that will punish their perceived enemies.

Fish are shrinking around the world. Here’s why scientists are worried. | Figuring out the reason why has big implications, with billions of people depending on seafood for protein. (wapo.st)

The pair restarted their work in Massachusetts with about 400 brook trout reared for up to eight months in tanks. The scientists kept some of the fish in waters set at 59 degrees Fahrenheit while others at 68 degrees Fahrenheit. All were fed the same diet....

vividspecter,

Currently in a small number of places, but this is very much a solvable problem, not something inherent.

vividspecter,

Apparently, he was disappointed about how trashy the J6 seditionists looked. Although I somehow doubt he would have helped even if they looked “classier” given his history with not paying his debts.

Should I avoid or engage in current news right now?

During the last ‘election summer’ things went haywire but ultimately nothing meaningful really happened, and not a whole lot really changed as a result of that unrest. This time things are going haywire again, and it seems like something big will happen but people thought that the last time… Would it just be better to...

vividspecter,

First one, then the other. Keep semi-regular contact, but don’t spend every waking moment on the news or social media, as you aren’t gaining much additional actionable information that way.

vividspecter,

LOL at the slogan of “Stop the Boats”. Literally copied from the Australian Liberal (conservative) party’s anti-asylum seeker scaremongering catchphrase. Conservatives really lack originality.

vividspecter,

That’s pretty good for early production and I’m sure that will improve over time.

vividspecter,

Another issue is that most of us simply won’t be around to experience the consequences

I think most people middle-aged or younger will experience the consequences (in fact, we already are with the increased frequency of severe weather events) it’s just that those consequences will get worse over time.

vividspecter,

Probably cheaper to just install standard heat pumps backed by renewable energy, but an interesting idea nevertheless. And the video is filled with Simpsons references which is always a bonus.

vividspecter,

For the same reason, it makes spur of the moment suicide attempts more likely, and more deadly.

vividspecter,

Fixing transport infrastructure would have the most impact. Narrower roads with fewer lanes and more complexity, 20mph/30kmph speed limits, better designed pedestrian crossings, and separated bike and pedestrian infrastructure. And requiring the vehicles themselves to be designed such that they are not just safe for the occupants, but safe for other vehicles and people too (which means lower hood heights and lower weight).

And in general, providing viable alternatives to driving so there are less vehicles on the road, making it safer to walk and bike.

vividspecter,

For sure, but even that is above the extremely low bar that the current conservatives (both the party and conservatives in general) have set.

vividspecter,

Serious about him being better than the current crop on this very specific issue? Yes. Other than that, he’s a piece of trash and a hack of a politician, so I don’t disagree with you on that point.

Although frankly I’d be happy if conservatism was buried altogether, and not just “populist” conservatism. Both forms are incredibly harmful to the poor and the disadvantaged in general.
