vzq,

Panic buy pasta and bog roll, just like last time.

I like Lemmy but there’s like a few dozen of us. We’re politically less relevant than mumsnet.

State of S3 - Your Laptop is no Laptop anymore (blog.jeujeus.de)

In this article, I aim to take a different approach. We will begin by defining a laptop according to my understanding. The I will share my personal history and journey to this point, as well as my current situation with my home and work laptops. Using this perspective, we will explore the current dysfunctionality of the standby...

vzq,

Unpopular opinion: the only vendor that does sleep right is Apple. The only reason they can is the tight vertical integration of the platform where they control all the hardware, all the drivers, and can exercise control over all the applications in the App Store.

More open platforms are essentially fucked.

vzq,

I mean, that’s fair. It’s certainly not a technical impossibility to get it right and keep getting it right.

Does the form factor between 3.5" and 2.5" matter in a NAS server? (slrpnk.net)

Been finding some good deals on 2.5 disks lately, but have never bought one before. Have a couple of 3.5 disks on the other hand in my Unraid server. Wondering how much it matters wether I get a 2.5 or not? What form factor do you prefer/usually go for?

vzq,

The key here is “better performance at similar price points”. There are absolutely amazing 2.5 drives made for server applications, but they cost so much money you’re better off getting SSD these days.

Speaking of which, you should consider SSD.

vzq,

That’s fair.

vzq,

Wait, Mexico elected a celebrated climate scientist to the presidency?

That’s pretty awesome.

vzq,

Amazingly, no. I had to follow a few links before I found out because apparently the fact that she’s a woman trumps all the other news, but she is, in fact, not a fascist.

vzq,

I look up the candidates/parties on their respective web sites and check out their positions.

Amazing, I know.

vzq,

For small enough values of “real”.

vzq,

Monsters Inc but all the apostles are Mike Wazowski.

vzq,

Are there any non-crappy ways to tie SSH into a single sign on flow yet?

I’m over managing users per application and typing in passwords.

vzq,

Tbf that’s mostly because they come in two varieties, overfilled (which behave as the image describes) and empty.

vzq,

There are lots of hard working bright people that are literally dying to come work and live in your country. This is not a population problem. It’s a racism problem.

vzq, (edited )

Call me when the global birth rate is falling. Until then it’s a local problem.

And when the global birth rate is flattening I will throw a fucking party because we can finally start thinking about global sustainability.

vzq,

Don’t be sorry, it’s the best news I’ve heard all decade!

The maddening thing is that you know the economic consequences would be easier to deal with a bit of solidarity, but we’re not going to.

vzq,

I am shocked, shocked, that the guy hand picked by right wing extremist lobby groups to represent their views on the Supreme Court is a hard right wing extremist.

Shocked.

vzq,

I had some serious demographic questions to get to 1/3. 26% sounds way more reasonable.

vzq,

I agree with your general point about the economics of hobbies, but I’m not sure it applies here.

If you are sensible about it gaming is, in real buck-per-hour prices, one of the cheapest forms of entertainment available.

vzq,

Hot take: It’s what old farts used to use back in the day.

These days you should just use encrypting file systems with per-file keying (like eg APFS) and stop worrying about deletion leaving file data around.

vzq,

Fair point. Data integrity and availability concerns often trump confidentiality.

Still, if your main concern is safe disposal rather than preventing unauthorized access, most major operating systems have ways to ensure continued access.

vzq,

Most people are as evil as they want.

That is to say, not a lot.

vzq,

Yes, that’s the successor document. You can also use the old iPhone 4 era iOS security guide, the file system details are not a fast moving target. The addition of the Secure Enclave changes things a bit.

Anyway, the idea is that data only hits disk encrypted with a per-file key that is stored with the directory information. When you delete a file, the key is obliterated, rendering the deleted data unrecoverable from block storage. The explanation proffered by the journalist that data isn’t really deleted when you delete it from disk, doesn’t hold. Because it is. Or at least the key to it.

A more likely explanation is spare copies either in the cloud or on the device not getting cleaned up. But deleted files on iOS are proper gone.

vzq,

They are on the file system in /private/var/mobile/Media, and no, they are not accessible using the file app. Apple, what can you do ;)
