I think this should have been made and shipped just for the satisfaction of plugging it in and hearing it wipe all the contacts. Board space be damned!

>open-simh has 3B2.

Oh wow... it's been a long time since I've used SIMH and back then 3B2 was nowhere to be found. I have a whole bunch of config files that will execute a PDP-11 with Unix v5, v6, v7, System III, RSTS/E, and some VAX ones that run BSD and Ultrix

>an "alpha" dir.

Oh wow, DEC Alpha support exists in some shape!

So after following the directions for air-frying these mozzarella sticks last time and having COLD mozzarella sticks, I turned up the temp and lengthened the time

And now I have PROPER ones!

Now at least this one is truly advertising its "dumpster on fire on wheels" ability, though sadly there's no fire in this take.

Best thing ever

Oh... doesn't hurt that the web page is about something I definitely should have bought back in the day (if it were available to me)

Some have all the luck. $8 here would cover a fraction of the shipping for ONE card, which I'd have had to pay $50 for. :o(

Jesus you'd think that with the amount of trying to beat the traffic from an ending merge lane that happens, "winning" the game is a national sport

Also, it's kind of hard to ask the internet for this because it keeps thinking I'm talking about the CAS aircraft instead of a dopey network appliance

Too bad I don't have anything that can use these cards right now

I even managed to keep the dongles for those modems and network cards, though I habsolutely DO NOT have the dongle for that jaz SCSI host adapter.

The Xircom card is the pride of this collection even though it requires type 3 space

what a (thankfully planned, even if poorly) power cut looks like

yakkoj,
@yakkoj@fosstodon.org avatar

it was "poorly" planned because upper manangement signed us up for keeping testing that should have been CANCELED going this weekend.

The power cut was known about months in advance, and this was a final-moment squeeze by IT to commit to testing this weekend when they should have just given the testers the weekend off. (the power work and HVAC work is happening ALL weekend.)

When the roo uses the road BETTER than motorists; when the dogs or cats can properly use a crosswalk when humans won't; we know we're failures as a species ;o)

(that's just as well; they were here first. We're the intruders on their territory.)

great... we wasted 3 hours of our life because someone slapped an ACL on interfaces that took 50 hosts down and BGP links and ISE and everything was shit on a shingle until that was discovered and removed

yakkoj,
@yakkoj@fosstodon.org avatar

It's also very clear we need console servers that do LOCAL credentials over TACACS when TACACS is hooped

yakkoj,
@yakkoj@fosstodon.org avatar

oh wait it gets better

The ACL was a klacker-whacker because whoever put it in forgot the "permit any any" (all Cisco ACLs are implicit DENY)

OK collapsing the NAS heads to the DS420 fixed a long-standing problem I had with Time Machine sparsebundle being backed up really slowly. Still not blazing fast (USB does that, even USB 3), but not a terrible stall-fest like it was on the DS712

Boy Time Machine has a mind of its own. First, there were 64MB bands, then I burnt that down and Time Machine made 2GB bands, and now this time, it settled on 256MB bands. macOS has magic 8 ball and ouija board to decide.

With gas prices the way they are in Australia (I saw signs that posted over $2 AU per litre), HOW is it possible that some people are running big US-type pickup trucks (at least they LOOK like porky F150s and Silverados)

By all measures, they should go bankrupt after one fill-up

I think systemd would have been better received had actual sysadmins had any input into the thing instead of what obviously happened

i.e., Lennart grtting hold of some MacOS X system and going "yeah that's a great idea, but it needs to be Linux-specific and try to do everything"

there's a comcast/xfinity commercial where they show a feel-good scene of a girl getting 6 vr headsets for her grandpa and his old navy pilot buddies as a surprise to play a flight simulator

in the commercial she just pushes a button and it's ready to go with a local party in the planes

in reality you know it'd be six hours of fiddling with software and hardware settings for each old man, minimum :D
