I personally don't see the "Eureka!" moment that big tech apparently does in moving EVERYTHING to the cloud when they struggle to design safe and reliable services as is. The whole cloud stuff just kind of says "sure it will be a privacy nightmare rife for exploitation from bad actors, but THINK of the money we could earn from it in the long run!"

What does defederating from Meta's Threads.net actually accomplish?

Afaik, whenever an Activitypub instance has defederated from another it has always had to do with some combination of bad user behavior, poor moderation, and/or spam. Are the various instance admins who have decided to preemptively block threads.net simply convinced that these traits will be inevitable with it? Is it more of a...

Unless Vermin Supreme decides to host his own instance on the fedi, I wholeheartedly agree.

Would you use threads if it respected your privacy?

I keep seeing everyone say their privacy is why they aren’t going to use threads. I don’t think that’s entirely true. I think most of us here have a hatred so deep for meta that even if they made the greatest app on earth, we’d still not use it. So, if threads actually respected your privacy would you use it?

In general, I think it's more unnecessary bloating of social media apps. Sometimes it feels like we're headed for a social media equivalent of the 1983 US video game market crash.

Threads would/could be the 'E.T. for the Atari 2600' in this scenario.

If he's spending so much time playing it in person AND online then I do agree the time he's playing vs. spending time with you is alarmingly disproportionate, especially if he is spending some of his leisure at home but opts to play D&D online with friends rather than sparing it to have some quality time with you.

I think a deep discussion with him is in order. But no, you are not in the wrong for wanting him to dedicate some time out of his schedule to you.

Mama Said by Metallica. I know the Load/Reload period of the band is dismissed or seen as a joke, but there are some good tracks on those albums. Mama Said is a country rock ballad that would've been unfathomable in pre-black album era Metallica.

I have an account on lemmy.world and considered joining other instances because they are often thrown out as the 'best' Reddit alternatives, but the interface gives me an odd sense of visual fatigue, if that makes sense. It just feels like navigating a labyrinth of links. Kbin on the other hand is far more up front in its presentation.

It's just friendlier to navigate and easy on the eyes. Perhaps I'm just very fussy though, because I let the newer Reddit layout grow on me despite previously swearing by the old CSS-friendly design.

Can we please remember to talk about things on the fediverse besides the fediverse itself?

Having spent a lot of time on Mastodon... There are tons of people there talking about federated and self-hosted services, software freedom, censorship, encryption, tech regulation... A very narrow range of topics directly surrounding the fediverse get a lot of attention....

I've noticed a few other Max Headroom AVIs on my Kbin browsing journeys, so I want to create a community that actively encourages and promotes using Max as your avatar in some form or another. The broadcast hijacker counts too.

Some folks really don't understand they can absolutely get what they want out of the fediverse, they're that accustomed to the limits of the more mainstream options. It's whatever they want it to be. If you're tired of not seeing enough of something, there's nothing stopping you from creating your own instance or a community within a pre-existing instance and rallying others to engage. You're always bound to find someone with a few similar interests around.

It will never grow or change if nobody is willing to directly participate in what they wish to see grow or change.

It's a shameful waste of life regardless of who these people were, all because one person didn't want to adhere to the rules. This kind of scenario can apply in and result in tragedy in so many different instances with different types of people. I'd at least hope the other eccentric entrepreneurs learn from this, but I'm not going to expect anything.

Who'da thunk the fediverse was just going to be used as a shield in a petty big tech feud?!

I understand it's normal to want to be in a relationship, but how do you feel happy when you aren't?

I'm 36, and while my love life has been varied and interesting, over the last few years I've started to want to settle down. I know it doesn't happen overnight. But recently it's been weighing on me more and more. I reminisce about past relationships. I feel hopeless about meeting someone in the future who shares my values....

I think, by that age, the pressure to settle down in a relationship and eventually a family is very much due to social expectation. Peer pressure by proxy, because many people around you, including your friends of similar ages, have probably settled down and/or become parents and it makes you feel like you have to follow suit. I've experienced similar pressure never really acknowledged it as something I wanted, but rather something I felt was expected of someone my age.

Consider that there are people significantly older than you who are still going through the same weird and wonderful phases and feelings of their lives, between relationships and perhaps balancing a desire to be social with a love/family life or vice versa. I don't think there's a set time or age to settle down and be happy. It sounds cliché, but it can and perhaps will happen when you least expect it.

Also as others have pointed out on here, work life gets in the way and leaves you too exhausted to be social. Just remember there's also people of all ages out there still looking for a reason to leave their lives of late nights out with mates behind. Sometimes having too much time on your hands can be a curse, it's all about striking a balance somewhere between work life and social life and it's not particularly easy. Either way, your social life is eventually prone to some kind of decline and a desire for something different, and that's the point where it should become clear what you truly want to do.

Simply put: Don't rush yourself, there's loads more time left on the clock to have your fun and figure out what you think is best for you. I'm not suggesting to NOT settle down since that's what you seem to want, but don't feel disappointed in yourself if you find it difficult to balance the want for settling down with the want for a social life. Go with what the heart wants while the option is still there, because one day that option may not be an option at all.

I got sucked into binging the V/H/S series a while ago and enjoyed all except Viral, which I turned off midway through as it was boring me to misery. 94 and the more recent 99 were the standouts for me.

Winning contestants were also forbidden from selling the cars on eBay. Like, made to sign some kind of agreement. I don't know how far that extended in regards to selling, but I found that little factoid about singling out eBay sales amusing.
