Gaming, news, tech, general literature. All of these are somewhat thriving, with a steady influx of posts and comments. At the same time, the userbase is sorely lacking for more niche communities. If it was just him and his buddies getting on this sub and doing dangerous voyages then I see no problem.
But to ignore industry experts and invite paying clients onto your ultra-dangerous submarine, well that's not a good look.
The simple fact that there was no possible egress without outside assistance should have been reason enough to scrap the design. With constant safety issues on what seems like every single one of their dives, I'm actually amazed that the Titan didn't kill someone sooner.

I like having unknown communities pop up in my feed because it helps me discover stuff I didn't know I was interested in. But I'd be a bit miffed if threads of dudes cutting off their peckers were showing along with threads of people discussing the war in Ukraine, for example.
Levelheaded moderation has shown itself to be invaluable time and time again, on every platform. And one of the difficult tasks required for successful moderation is deciding what kind of content just doesn't belong in the lobby.
If I ever want to see hardcore or intense echo-chamber stuff, I can just log into another instance that allows that sort of content. That seems like a fair compromise.
Not to mention believing there's anything "left wing" about Reddit.
This is like the "No true Scotsman" fallacy.
Try posting any less-than left wing ideas on any big Reddit sub and see how many upvotes you get. I'm not talking about alt-right nonsense, just stuff like "maybe public school women's teams should be separate from teams with trans women athletes on them."
Actual discussion about anything political is impossible on Reddit anywhere but small communities, because the site is such an echo-chamber.
I wouldn't be surprised if I get attacked here just for using that as an example, because it's such a clusterfuck of a topic.
You completely missed and supported my point at the same time.
I was debating...
Kichae: Not to mention believing there's anything "left wing" about Reddit.
...and nothing else.
Myself: I wouldn't be surprised if I get attacked here just for using that as an example
Thank you for insulting me for being uniformed, while entirely missing the point of discussion. We all know that insulting people's intelligence is the best way to spread awareness.
The landing page at join-lemmy.org should lead straight into active content, and then let users choose an instance once they're ready.
I am particularly motivated to ditch Reddit and yet the first time I saw that page I figured I was going to need to configure a bunch of shit to get started.
So that's one major issue that needs to be addressed. I'm sure it will be in time.
CEO Steve Huffman says tech giants should not be able to trawl Reddit’s huge store of data for free. But that information came from users, not the company...
There was absolutely a phase shift in the atmosphere of Reddit when it grew exponentially.
Used to be, people were willing to discuss topics in ways that had at least some nuance. But nowadays you get attacked for discussion that doesn't fit the narrow guidelines of "acceptable".
Still, the smaller communities of Reddit retain some of the open-minded discussion that's lost in big subs.
Hopefully here we can grow to a respectably sized community, while still allowing the freedom of dissenting opinion.
Without algorithms that target division to increase numbers, that might actually be possible here in a way that's non-existent on the corporate platforms. But it'll be a difficult achievement.
Prior to the protest reddit was in full support of the protest. Most polls on subs supported a shutdown. Now, seemingly every community cant understand why the protest was needed and they're calling it a mod power trip. There is a 3rd possibility. This is an unfounded conspiracy but reddit themselves could be manipulating...
I'm in the process of deleting all my comments but it's taking a while.
I've got probably 100k karma over a few accounts.
I feel kinda bad about taking away all the technical help and collaborative type stuff I've done over the years, but... Reddit wants to use all that data to cash out on it's users, so it has to go.
While larger, more general communities are thriving on the Fediverse - I'm missing out on the niche communities
