Quite possibly a luddite.

You cannot view microblog posts from Lemmy, so the only way you'll see anything from Threads is if a user from there responds to content posted to Lemmy or similar sites. Possibly also if they choose to tag a community in their post, but that seems unlikely for anything else than testing purposes.

Same as Mastodon users, really.

Is it worth buying the Mac keyboard for a dedicated Linux PC instead of the windows one?

What is your personal preference based on experience? I Assume because Mac is Unix and Linux is Unix based, it would be more suited, but I have no personal experience with the layout. I am willing to try something new if i hear enough merits for it, and I also find the windows layout somewhat inadequate(The grass is greener on...

If you want to crazy with the keyboard, consider switching to Dvorak instead! It's an investment of course, but you get used to it surprisingly quick and the typing experience is a lot better. As for the function button you can always just remap them to your preference, I don't see the point in making a fuzz. Most distros are also made with a PC keyboard in mind, not that I know if that matters.

As for GNOME vs KDE, it's up to personal preference. I enjoy my GNOME setup a lot, running just a couple extensions to get it just the way I like it. I enjoy that there are very few options and distractions around that I am not interested in. And I of course understand that other people prefer KDE. It's great that there are two dominant DEs with such completely different design philosophies.

It makes perfect sense the second one stops believing in the lie that America is a meritocratic society.

sab,

You are completely right, and I think everyone in power realizes that. They also realize that they can buy a spot for their kids in a good university, but there is no way in hell their kids would make it to the top any other way. So they have no interest in changing it.

Changing the way universities work in the US would require a freaking revolution. It's not about giving opportunities to those from worse-off backgrounds; it's about taking away opportunities from the rich and tearing down structures of inherited power. So naturally the resistance to doing so is going to be immense, and whoever sets out to do it need to know what they're up against.

Probably why the republicans are so angry about forgiving student loan debts.

sab,

For sure. There's a lot of talk about forgiving student loans, but there's a reason why they are more quiet about fixing the broken system.

Never noticed 𓂺 before. Impressive.

I was listening to BBC World Report this morning. They made quick mention of it along with some other things happening in the conflict, then went on to introduce their "expert" who would illuminate the situation.

Their so called expert was an employee of some Israeli institute of security or whatever, and he talked on for ages with minimal push-back about how the israeli army is doing everything by the book and how "Gaza is safe for civilians, and if it's not it's the fault of Hamas".

That was all the coverage they did.

What a fucking joke.

One could almost be tricked into believing that the world is a little bit more complicated than what some simplistic tropes of good and evil would have us believe.

I'm in the process of finishing up my PhD in Italy and moving somewhere much less pleasant where pay is much better. So I guess it's rather the opposite in my case: Had money not been an issue I would have stayed where I am.

I think these people are more typically from troll farms than genuinely pro-Palestine, but some of theme probably are that stupid as well. I guess it's a mixed bag.

Israel/US relations were at an all-time low under Biden already before the attack, and there's every indication he's using every back channel he has to make Netanyahu slow down his genocide. Sometimes diplomatic solutions are more efficient than a public Circus.

sab,
sab avatar

Yeah, US cutting its unconditional support to Israel was overdue decades ago. Howevers, as long as the rest of the political landscape doesn't follow, Biden acting unilaterally and publicly just amounts to political suicide with no gain for anyone.

It's a friendly community, and Lomiri is a great DE that people have also gotten up and running on [other distros].

For the time being it runs better on Android devices than on "pure" linux phones such as the PinePhone, but I have great experiences with it. If you don't depend on other IM services than Signal you could probably use it as a daily driver on several phones already.

sab,
sab avatar

I think the Fairphone 4 is also worth checking out. It works great with Ubuntu Touch, SailfishOS seems to be doing well on the device, and there's developments towards PostmarketOS. :)

sab,
sab avatar

Why do you think Ubuntu Touch is almost dead? The development community is pretty active. They recently finished the huge task of upgrading to 20.04, and are hard at work getting up to speed with 24.04, at which point they will have paid back a lot of technical debt.

Ubuntu Touch on a supported device is probably the most usable experience you can have with Linux phones as a daily driver at the moment, especially as Waydroid runs quite well on many devices to fill the gaps.

And http still works in any browser I know of.

I kind of get your frustration though. I set up my personal website precisely to get away from big platforms; yet my HTTPS is validated by Google. It feels like a defeat still having them involved in the process.

sab,
sab avatar

Yeah, there's ways around it for sure, so it's not the end of the world.

I'm not super technical though, so as my hosting provider uses Google for HTTPS authentication I'll just reluctantly stick with that for now. Of course I could have found a different provider, but I found it a somewhat difficult market to navigate. I'm enough of a rookie that part of me is just happy things seem to be working - when I set up the website a few months ago I kind of assumed HTTPS was some black magic stuff that I would never manage to implement.

sab,
sab avatar

I guess for now it's misleading more than anything, as they say it's the smallest of the three major federated platforms. That's hardly precise as neither Threads nor Bluesky is federated yet.

Bluesky should federate at the end of the month though, and a bridge to activitypub is already ready. Interesting times ahead.

How does employing a rapist not constitute an unsafe work environment for female employees?

So I just discovered that I have been working next to the waste of oxygen that raped my best friend several years ago. I work in a manufacturing environment and I know that you can’t fire someone just for being a sex offender unless it directly interferes with work duties (in the US). But despite it being a primarily male...

That wouldn't really solve anything though, as long as they're still out and about in society. So if we follow this argument basically where we end up is prison for life.

If we are to release people we have to give them a real chance go get their life right. Releasing people from prison only to cripple them and make sure they can never live a normal life is not likely to solve any problems.

At least he's dating someone roughly his own age. He could probably do like Musk and date a series of women in their 30s, but he opted for a different strategy.

I hate everything about Jeff Bezos, especially his very existence, but this is the one thing I think it's dumb to criticise him for.

sab,

Biden is fine. It's your fascist problem we're worried about.

Sincerely,

Of course - and hopefully soon Erdogan will rot and someone more worthy will take over. I'm not saying we should stop considering Turkey allies, I just don't want to depend on them that's all.

"The" economy is going great, but since the US has an insane problem of inequality caused by decades of trickle down economics, this does not necessarily translate to the lived experience of ordinary people.

Standing up for unions and student loan forgiveness are two examples of policies the current administration pursue in order to deal with this. They are very limited by what they can do because the senate sucks.

Female singers only want to sing about love, relationships, or breakups. They need to sing more about Godzilla, Vikings, The Grim Reaper, or making a bet with the Devil for a golden fiddle.

At this point in history there’s been a billion songs from female singers about relationships. Nearly every song revolves around that topic....

sab,

OP didn't realize (Don't Fear) The Reaper is a love song either, so there might be some mental shortcuts going on.

We'll be able to fly
