for March 8. Would you be welcome (if you had to stay with one of your characters for a week)?

I have an uneasy relationship with my characters. If I came to them with hat in hand, they'd probably let me sleep on the couch, but they'd lock up the silverware and good china.

@AskPippa

I'm an imperfect writer creating imperfect characters. Things are bound to get tense now and then.

The villains in my stories tend to be organizations - political parties, terrorist groups, governments, and the like. I take inspiration from real life.

"Slavery's Avatar" will be released sometime in the second half of 2024, or so I'm told.

for December 7: Do you use foreshadowing in your writing, and it so, how do you do it?

I usually do it after the fact. I'll write something, for example, about the character drinking tea, and I'll think, "I should foreshadow this! It's an important plot turn!"

So I'll go back several pages or a chapter or whatever, and create a plot element, saying, "Well just call this Chekhov's teakettle."

There's a senior living facility on the other side of the highway, and they have this wonderful Schimmel Wilhelm grand piano in the lobby. (Don't ask me how they afforded it.) I wonder if I can make arrangements to come in a play a a couple of songs for an audience. I know they have recitals there.

You know, I'm beginning to have serious doubts about Google's AI capabilities. If Google hasn't yet figured out how to spot motorcycles, buses, traffic signals and fire hydrants without our assistance, maybe that's a bad sign for its artificial intelligence capabilities. 😂

November 11 - What tools can your MC use?

Teagan: It might be easier to list the tools they don't use.

Wolf: Specializes in using medical equipment.

Etta: It might be argued that she is a tool.

Sharon: Spends most of the story getting acquainted with, and learning to use, iGlasses.

Every election means every election at every level! Every matters! In the past few weeks:

The GOP proposed a bill to allow schools to deny students free lunches based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Our military has been weakened by a Republican blocking military promotions because he opposes Pentagon abortion policy.

North Carolina is a 50/50 state, but the GOP just passed a gerrymandered electoral map that flips 4 of the state's 14 seats into Republican control. (1/3)

Amonticue,
@Amonticue@c.im avatar

@augieray

Fortunately, the GOP lawmakers do not have the votes to override an expected veto. But that's today, in Wisconsin. What are we going to do about the next cycle?

Twenty-three other states already have laws or policies banning gender-affirming care.

The guest book asked me to sign in and write where I was from.
The Isles of Langerhans, I wrote.

"Do you know how often we get freshmen biology students writing that?" the hostess said with a impatient sigh.

"Do their physics major friends tell you how they rode in on a Carnot Cycle?"

"Aren't you a little old for this?" she asked.

    As somebody who grew up in southern California, I can advise you to expect cool to mildly warm temps, unless the Santa Ana winds start blowing. These are hot dry winds blowing from the desert. It is, of course, near impossible to prognosticate specific weather that far in advance, but there is a small, but non-zero chance of rain.

    I'm not a fashion diva, so I have no idea what to tell you about skirt choices.

    I have been struggling to complete a short(!) story. I know exactly how it ends, and that was, in fact, the entire basis for writing the story in the first place. It's like thinking of a great punch line and trying to figure out a joke to go with it.

    I believe that a big obstacle is that some of the characters have to make really bad decisions. This isn’t difficult to do, since these characters are U.S. politicians.

    As someone whose civil rights may very well hang on the next election, and the one after that, and the one after that, this is just too close to real life. I write fiction, not political commentary. On the other hand, what good is science fiction if we can’t use it to make social/political commentary?

    Maybe I should take the attitude that this short story is simply preemptive revenge. Prevenge? Is that a word? It is now.

    Note: I just googled the word “prevenge” and the only entry I can find for it is a 2016 British slasher movie.
