thinking about something one of the topnotchers in my stat class said

we were paired in an exercise together, and we had to state the null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis of a certain test

she was so caught up on the specific wording of things. whether or not I put the dependent variable before the independent variable, things like that. she wanted us to construct the sentence exactly like how they were constructed in the examples given to us. she said she'd memorize how the hypotheses were worded in the examples, in preparation for the exams.

I pointed out that doing it exactly the same doesn't really matter as long as the statement is correct. I also pointed out that the sentence sounds weird and grammatically incorrect if we strictly stuck to the format.

she said it doesn't matter, she noticed that the stat lecture examples weren't always grammatically correct anyway.

anyway. today one of my other classmates asked if I had done a taxonomic paper already. he's asking for copies. he says he just wants to see the "format" for how to write one.

idk. this stuff really bothers me. I mean, I'm guilty of it too. It eases the anxiety sometimes, having some assurance you're doing something "right".

But this isn't really about us doing things "right", isn't it? This is about us parroting back what we're taught. Rote memorization rather than critical thinking. coloring within the lines because we're not confident that we actually learned enough to draw new ones.

I really, really hate academia sometimes.

also just. we did a report in biochem class today. it's so frustrating that no one wants to just say, "we don't know yet" or "our best guess is...".

it's frustrating how readily people would rather declare their bullshitting as fact rather than admit they weren't prepared to answer every question in the universe. why can't we just be allowed to not know things.

but was also on my ass for not having a word-for-word script ready for the oral report. it makes him anxious, me not having a script.

idk man. maybe be more anxious about you trusting a machine rather than your own understanding of our report.

my friends and i started talking about what "got us into yaoi" and, my actual answer to that aside,

i'm realizing a pattern here. jinx/wally teen titans being one of my earliest ships,,, the way i used to like tmnt12 leorai before it got messy,,, catradora,,, batcat sort of being the most Refined Version of these tropes for me and eating all that's left of my brain,,,
