My understanding is at least one use need to search and follow another magazine for it to federate. Then it will federate new comments and posts, but may not take over the old ones. So your newly federated magazine will look a bit weird for a while until it catches up.
That’s what I understand from conversations, I’m not sure of the actual inner workings of it.
Thank you - this lines up with much of what I have been experiencing.
If I might pick your brain, do you know if there would be a reason a magazine/community is not searchable from another instance? I have also noticed that some comments on my own posts from users of lemmy.world (and others) do not federate, while others do. Are both these simply a result of the delay?
Thanks - I expect a lot of these things will get ironed out as the fediverse matures.
Pretty much this! As long as a user is subscribed, new stuff will get sent over here. But content prior to the add tends to be hit or miss. Depending how much the original instance wants to share.
@hariette thank you so much for your hard work on Artemis! I was skeptical of kbin and the fediverse at first, but Artemis is really shaping up to be an amazing portal to the fediverse and sold me on it.
I have noticed the content prior to federating is hit or miss - I wonder if this is why some pinned posts by moderators don't exactly transfer over...
Unfortunately, /kbin doesn’t federate the state of a post being pinned 😓 at least not at this moment. And neither does it do well with federating content from before a community was federated.
But new stuff does come in, as long as someone is subscribed.
The magazine is hosted on kbin.social so that gets all the content, it's supposed to be pushed out to other instances but that needs manual triggering - even though it shouldn't.
Some comments on that bug would be appreciated, I'm trying to get it noticed as it's a big failing with the federation.
Thank you for replying! This could certainly be it!
I am sure they will get to it eventually. Kbin is, after all, still technically a beta and there are some growing pains associated with such a new platform.
Does the app not work on android in general?
Samsung Galaxy note 10 plus and Sony Xperia 1V: just a swirly circle. With or without vpn, it doesn't connect to anything.
For dummies like me - you can't subscribe to magazines via the Artemis app yet, so subscribe to this ArtemisQuiver magazine using the web interface. You'll then see this pinned post in your Posts list in the app.
Note: ArtemisQuiver doesn't immediately appear in your list of magazines that appears when you click on Home. Not sure how you force a refresh of your magazine subscriptions in the app. Whoops - this is a known issue: https://github.com/hariettem/Artemis/issues/63
Subscribing to magazines in the app seems to work fine for me? I subscribed to the magazine in the app, and it shows up as a subscribed magazine on the web
@ViridityCorn Yes, you're quite right. I see now what my mistake was. I was looking for a "search communities/magazines" function, which does not yet exist in Artemis (unless I've missed that too).
Browsing All, then clicking on a magazine name you're not currently subscribed to, and then the plus button on the top right does subscribe you to that magazine. It didn't occur to me to do it that way because I never use All, I browse only magazines I'm subscribed to, even on using kbin's website. So in order to join a new magazine, I was looking for the Artemis equivalent of this search screen: https://kbin.social/magazines
Searching for magazines is possible, though maybe a bit buggy. You can search for unfollowed magazines in the same way you would look through your subscribed magazines Pics related
@Lilkev Thanks for letting me know that the functionality does exist in the app. I played around with it and have now figured out what the problem was.
First of all, I'm used to a list of communities (whether I'm subscribed to them or not) appearing as I type in Joey for Reddit. Ie, if I type in "star" Joey would list starcraft, startrek, starwars and so on. Artemis doesn't work like this. (Which is fair enough by the way, it's just that I wasn't used to Artemis's behaviour and stupidly assumed it would work like the other app.)
Secondly though, even after I hit enter in the search bar after my search term, nothing appeared. Ie, pressing enter after entering, say "music", did not initiate the search.
It was only after playing around for a while that I realised I actually had to click on "Find magazines with <search term>..." to initiate a search for unsubscribed magazines. This I think is is confusing because the "Find magazines with..." looks like an informational message, not a clickable action button.
Ooh, I have a quick question. I'm seeing a bunch of new posts in German, so I'm guessing I may need to block an instance. Is there a way to do that in Artemis yet? (I should probably check the roadmap)
EDIT: maybe I should make this its own post. Also, deffo agreed on editing, I'm a very indecisive person and I edit my comments a bunch after posting lol
There's currently not support for that in the app. Also, for right now you should refer to the Github milestones. They're more up to date at the moment.
