"The European Union’s executive arm is set to recommend a 90 per cent net reduction of greenhouse gases by 2040, a target backed by climate scientists and criticised by the industry.

[This should] bridge the gap between its existing goals to cut net emissions 55% by 2030 and reach net zero emissions by 2050."

@CelloMomOnCars “A key new component of the 2040 goal will be carbon removals, including technologies such as direct air capture or carbon sequestration”

Not serious then?

@urlyman

The proposal is apparently for 10% of emissions to go to CCS. I'm sure the percentage will be the subject of negotiations.

It's not huge, and the economics of it may nix it altogether in the end. As long as there are no subsidies for it.

@CelloMomOnCars my first thought when I see news of some grand plan for 2040 is “What is the purposeful and coherent plan for this year, and next year?”

Perhaps they have one, but if that’s not being articulated assertively, then it’s not a plan

Ambitious!
Necessary

"With EU Parliament elections in June, the new target is set to test political appetite to continue Europe's ambitious green agenda - which is facing pushback from some governments and industries concerned about the cost, even as climate change unleashes more destructive heat, floods and wildfires across Europe.

Countries including Denmark, Poland and Bulgaria have signalled openness to a 90% emissions cut target for 2040."

@CelloMomOnCars It's just too expensive to save the planet. If anyone is around in fifty years, I am sure they will appreciate the cost savings.

@tmstreet

Did you know? most climate solutions save money in the long run.

Did you know? TODAY the world spends $ 7 trillion EVERY YEAR on fossil fuel subsidies and cleanup costs.

You know what's REALLY expensive? the consequences of climate change is we do nothing.

Compared to that, climate action is dirt cheap, if not negative cost.
Save money AND save the planet!

"A 90% emissions cut by 2040 would require coal to be phased out in the energy sector, while the majority - 60% - of 's remaining use of fossil fuels for energy would be oil used in road vehicles, shipping and aviation, it said."

The choice:

Invest € 1.5 tn a year to cut carbon emissions,
and
(If you manage to stay below 1.5):

SAVE € 2.4 tn in prevented economic losses, and
SAVE € 2.8 tn in avoided fossil fuel imports.

Because the current fossil fuel addiction is expensive.

Caveat:
Someone has managed to earmark a bunch of the € 1.5 tn to go to undeveloped, unproven carbon capture tech.
Hmmmmmm smells like oil n gas meddling.

When throwing around these numbers for what the transition costs (and they are scary large), you MUST also take into account the savings, which are even larger!

We will stop spending on fossil fuels (the sun and the wind are free!), fossil fuel infrastructure (think pipelines and their leaks), not to mention the externalised costs of the pollution, $7 tn every year, according to the IMF.

After farmer protests:

"“All sectors” would need to contribute to the effort, the executive's plan says. But a mention of a possible 30 percent cut to pollution between 2015 and 2040, which was in previous drafts seen by POLITICO, had been removed.

Also excised were recommendations for citizens to make changes to their behavior, like eating less , and a push to end . "

The proposal is out:

"The recommended on Tuesday that the slashes net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040, a target that will test political appetite to continue the region's ambitious fight against climate change ahead of EU elections."

"The [Greens'] manifesto calls for the energy system to rely on 100 percent renewable sources and to phase out all fossil fuels by 2040, “starting with coal by 2030.”

The amended their manifesto to respond to farmers’ discontent, saying they will campaign for “a new agricultural model that reduces emissions, protect the environment, and foster social justice.”"

"The goal leans heavily on the largely unproven approach of carbon removal, concerning researchers.

Researchers also say that although reducing carbon emissions is crucial, there needs to be more focus on adaptation."
