Does the Bible tell us to obey the posted speed limit?

As we all know, police won't pull you over for going slightly above the speed limit. In some places you can only get away with 5mph over, while in other places it's commonplace for traffic to move at 20mph over the posted speed limit. So why would anyone in their right mind decide to go under the speed limit? Why would anyone decide to obey the law?

Let's consult with a few verses in Romans 13:1-14 (1599 Geneva):

1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers: for there is no power but of God: and the powers that be, are ordained of God.

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist, shall receive to themselves condemnation.

5 Wherefore ye must be subject, not because of wrath only, but also for conscience sake.

14 But put ye on the Lord JESUS CHRIST, and take no thought for the flesh, to fulfill the lust of it.

To recap, our earthly government is established by God for the purpose of His glory, and as such our earthly authorities rule with His blessings, generally speaking. We must follow the law of man inasmuch as it reflects God's rule.

But what if we're in a hurry? Well, there are situations in which defiance to the law of man is acceptable to God. As Acts 5:29 (1599 Geneva) tells us:

29 Then Peter and the Apostles answered, and said, We ought rather to obey God than men.

And the footnote from that verse is relevant:

We ought to obey no man, but so far forth as obeying him, we may obey God.

So then yes, when we hasten to do God's will, we may receive a speeding ticket with God's blessing. But in all other cases, we are to obey the law.

What about the letter of the law versus the spirit of the law? Christ emphasizes throughout His ministry that we must adhere to the spirit of the law. So then does it really matter if we literally follow the speed limit, so long as we come close? If you want to follow the spirit of the law, then you don't surpass the speed limit, and you don't just go 0.01mph under the speed limit: you travel 5–10mph under the speed limit.

Behind the wheel, just like anywhere else, we act in accordance with our love for God.
