Data Hoarder

wolfshadowheart, in Is this a duplicate community?

https://kbin.social/m/datahoarder@lemmy.ml is a federated server so we here at Kbin can see it but there's times where posts or comments may not show up (though that doesn't seem to be the case, it just can happen). Here we are at m/DataHorder@kbin.social which is for redirects to the larger sub, though.

The way I see it, it's like having a home aggregator that can talk with all the others. There's 300 subs on KBin because 300 people on KBin accounts are interested in Datahoarding and there's another one that you also posted on with 900. To be honest, I have no idea how I am subscribed to both and only saw the larger 900 one listed in Kbin when searching in our magazines.

I imagine it's one of those things where if you don't know that it exists and it doesn't populate in searches then how could anyone know lol. But it's no different than any other shouting into the void, I'd say if anyone had content it would probably be posted. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Also with the fediverse it's possible to stage posts with post planners so theoretically someone could be subbed to both and post across all them (and Mastodon or wherever else). For instance just today I made a post on an android sub and got 100 upvotes, but if I had put in more effort I could have gotten this information to a wider group of people.

As you said, it can be a challenge but as you also said it isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Afterall, you did get a response didn't you! :D that's engagement despite it being a smaller redirect sub!

threelonmusketeers,

Thanks for the response!

Huh, interesting. I’m on sh.itjust.works, and it shows only 3 subscribers for !DataHorder and 6 for !DataHoarder. I guess subscriber numbers aren’t tallied across all instances?

Is there an established Lemmy etiquette for what should be done in the cases of communities fragmented across multiple instances? Post to all instances? Just the largest? Just the smallest? Pick one at random and cross-post to others?

I have no clue unfortunately haha! The way I see it, the mod/instance admin should be the ones to decide if they want the content or not. Say, the user can post to both c/DataHoarder and m/DataHoarder and the madmins can determine from there. For the user it's important to get engagement and the communities on c/ aren't necessarily the same people from m/ so you can get two different community opinions while still having some overlap.

I had a lot of these same questions when looking for where to post my informational post regarding Android. I ended up only posting on Kbin and my Beehaw
