Two big takeaways from this interview with the CEO of :

  1. Figma’s plan is now to go for IPO. Let the enshittification begin.

  2. Figma is trying to work out how to use customer data to train AI models.

And a bonus takeaway:

  1. The definition of startup must have changed because, despite being a company with ~$600 million ARR, he says “We’re a startup”.

@Brendanjones I've chatted with a couple companies lately that referred to themselves as "startups" despite multiple rounds of investment and considerable revenue. It seems like a convenient way to keep employees “hustling”.

@mikehaynes yeah I've heard plenty of companies say they have a 'startup culture', which is ... fair enough, whatever, describe your culture how you like, we know it's shorthand for "we expect you to work for more hours than we pay you".

But actually calling a $10 billion company a startup is laughable.

@Brendanjones Would be pity to see Figma becoming the next "Adobe behemoth" but who knows...
P.S. Startup valuated at $ 10 billion (and they tried to sell it for $ 20 billion)?

@optimiced Yeah, pretty sure it's a scale-up.

On going for IPO:

“But yeah, there are two paths that venture-funded startups go down. You either get acquired or you go public. And we explored thoroughly the acquisition route. “

In other words, the only route (they think is) left to them is IPO.

On AI:

“Designers’ data is certainly interesting. But it’s an area that’s still underexplored for us because, in order to do it at scale, we want to do that in collaboration with our user community and do it in a way that aligns with the values of our user community, too.”

In other words, they’re not doing it but they realise their data is a goldmine of design work that nobody else has, so they’re certainly looking to see if they can do it (without thoroughly pissing off their users).
