Final Fantasy Could Ditch Numbers for Future Instalments

Speaking with GQ Magazine, producer Naoki Yoshida admitted it’s something he’s mentioned to his bosses: “Maybe it's about time we removed the numbers from the title,” he observed. “For example, you have Final Fantasy 14. You get a new player coming in and it's like, 'Wait a minute, why do I have to play Final Fantasy 14 if 16 is out?' Why don't we just call it Final Fantasy Online – just get rid of the number altogether, and that'll make it easier to understand.”

Bubkis,

I mean it's not like they're even similar to the original games anymore. Bravely Default is more of a Final Fantasy game than any Final Fantasy has been for a long time, it's just brand recognition at this point

It's probably for the best. Though one minor issue is that they've been using numbers to basically identify the most prominent games for a while. Non-numbered Final Fantasy games have most typically been spin offs with a rather different feel to them. But that's probably a fairly minor thing that can be offset with enough advertising.

As an aside, when I think about it, Tactics and Tactics Advance are the only non-numbered FF games I've actually played and enjoyed. Most non-numbered games didn't feel like they interested me and also felt like they rarely come up in discussion, which I took to mean they are unimpressive.

At this point the numbers serve no purpose. They should have done that a long time ago.
