Final Fantasy XVI Demo Impressions - All Aboard The Rollercoaster Ride

The developers behind Final Fantasy XVI have described the game to be a rollercoaster ride, where the thrill and emotions fluctuate up and down that makes it one unforgettable experience.

Now that the demo for Square Enix’s latest entry for its flagship series, PS5 players can now sample that rollercoaster ride. And then some.

I had a great time with the demo, but I didn’t play the extra fight stuff after you finish it because I don’t want to spoil anything.

It really feels like this installment will be, just, good. Yoshi P and co have done a really good job with their character work (having played FF14 for a decade I had no doubts, really), and each cutscene is really well produced. The world so far feels better lived in, if that makes any sense. Something that pulled me out of, say FF15, was the fact that they had cell phones but somehow the main character and his fiancé talked to each other via magic dog carrying a notebook(‽). Just stuff like that that doesn’t make sense doesn’t seem to exist so far in this world. I mean, the demo is short, so maybe we’ll get some Cup Noodle sponsorships later on (I highly doubt it), but I feel like Yoshi P is taking this game seriously. And so far it shows in the demo. I’m not saying the game can’t have fun, but it’s a nice change of pace in my opinion.

I also really liked seeing people use magic to do mundane things in the world like filling up a glass of water or pruning trees. If your world has magic in it and is common enough, of course you’d use it to make life easier in these ways. Pretty neat.

djiordje,

Has anyone finished the demo? Wondering how long it is - I'm debating whether or not to play it through and continue when the game releases or just wait til release day.

It took me just shy of 3 hours to do the story stuff; there was a lot more than I had anticipated. There's also a bonus mode after you finish the story part where you get to play through that castle segment the game journos got to play through months ago, which is fun because you get three Eikons instead of one and it's a good deal tougher than the story segment.

Something to keep in mind is that the story part you play through is the actual beginning of the game, so your progress can carry over, if you want.

harbrodur,

I liked it too. The game seems "good". I am not amazed or over-excited for it. However, I can see myself play the full game.

A few points:

  • The fighting-gamplay seemed very straight-forward and easy. I never played a FF game without the round-based fighting before, so this felt very new to me. I really liked the boss fights. CINEMATIC STRIKE! :D
  • Great Kojima-length cut scenes
  • Interesting characters
  • The artstyle feels like a mix of Game of Thrones, Dragon's Dogma and Fire Emblem to me. (A good thing!)

I am off to learn more about the game. The demo was my first contact with FF16.
Hm....maybe I liked the demo more than I thought at first :D
