helloSystem is a desktop system for creators with a focus on simplicity, elegance, and usability. Its design follows the “Less, but better” philosophy. It is intended as a system for “mere mortals”, welcoming to switchers from the Mac. is used as the core operating system https://hellosystem.github.io/docs/

Linux_Is_Best,

@nixCraft I am pleased to see that development is still being worked on.

Like any FreeBSD, it doesn't like all my hardware, especially my Wi-Fi 6 network / Bluetooth card and the display isn't the resolution I'd like... But it is still coming along nicely and looks great.

Linux_Is_Best,

@uma I have not tried the newest Alpha, but I am in no hurry to do so either.

FreeBSD is just as the name implies... Free software.

I am someone who needs non-free software, such as media codecs.

@uma

It's been a while since I've checked, but I doubt it.

  • x264
  • x265
  • ffmpeg
  • gst plugins-good / bad / ugly
  • libavcodec
  • libavdevice
  • libavfilter
  • libavformat
  • libdvdcss2
  • VLC (with the extra codec pack)

Generally a good list to go by:

Linux_Is_Best,

@uma Oh, but I can, and I will. 🤣

The last time I tried FreeBSD was less than 30 days ago. But beyond those 30 days is several yearS of trying to peek into the FreeBSD ecosystem, and it hasn't moved much between several years ago to 30 days ago, and all the time in between that.

So unless FreeBSD has dramatically done a complete reversal and all the tech news outlets have not reported it... I doubt't much as changed in the 20 something (almost 30), since I last checked.

Linux_Is_Best,

@uma But in fairness, I will burn another copy to USB and try, once more.

... Just to be fair....

I'll even post a video.

@Linux_Is_Best @uma cough Ventoy cough

Linux_Is_Best,

@emag @uma Yes, but I don't want @uma claiming that was the issue. So I'll do a direct burn.

Linux_Is_Best,

@emag @uma As promised. -- I even made a video.

Using the latest alpha release, it does not even find the network card.

(Excuse my mumbling in the background as I thought out loud. I thought I had muted it 🤣 )

Linux_Is_Best,

@uma @emag You're trolling.

This whole thread is about helloSystem, which I just proved, didn't work. With that proof, you now want to move onto another distro....

I'm not going to nuke my system, just to prove a point. FreeBSD does not have a Live CD, so that's not happening.

emag,
@emag@strangeplace.me avatar

@Linux_Is_Best @uma arguably, NomadBSD is a "live" version, though their latest is based on 13.1-RELEASE-p5... 14 still seems to be "upcoming".

I am in no way, shape, or form an expert on FreeBSD, as the last I worked with it was the 4 to 5 transition for an embedded product in 20mumble

Linux_Is_Best,

@emag @uma In the past, NomadBSD, has offered me better results.

I am willing to try it again. It has been over a year since I loaded, NomadBSD.

@uma @Linux_Is_Best wait, 14 is out? I'm still trying to coordinate an upgrade from 13.0 to 13.2 after my predecessor found problems with 13.1...

Linux_Is_Best,

@emag @uma v14 was planned for August 24, 2023 https://www.freebsd.org/releases/14.0R/schedule/

It is still listed as the "current" branch https://www.freebsd.org/where/

uma,

@Linux_Is_Best @emag Check your own link, it's scheduled for Oct 23 release.

Linux_Is_Best,

@uma @emag Read what I said.

It reached the stable branch August 24, 2023. The release is planned for October.

If all you want to be is argumentative.... blocked.

emag,
@emag@strangeplace.me avatar

@Linux_Is_Best @uma honestly, all I care about from my professional view is that October date, as it moves my current work state even further into the "ancient". That...speeds up the timeline I'm looking at to get to 13.2 on some high-vis systems, just so we can move to 14. And... I'm thinking about work too much on a now-to-me Saturday...

ram,

@nixCraft none of these less-but-better wannabes can ever beat the elegant simplicity of FVWM or even MWM.

cmooon,

@nixCraft Folks should also have a look at ravynOS (https://www.ravynos.com/), also FreeBSD based and seemingly good support for osx apps

thanius,
@thanius@mastodon.chuggybumba.com avatar

@nixCraft I how long it will take until Apple's lawyers notice that they've taken the OSX design/design language and/or the "hello" graphical font demo.

eickot,

@nixCraft Really interesting that one of the hardwares they support is @frameworkcomputer mainboard 11 gen. Next week I should try to run it on mine 12 gen

lockeslacker,

@nixCraft Pretty neat project, FreeBSD for normies sounds interesting
