So, here's where I am right now. I'm Freelance... I get plenty of design work and appear to be at least somewhat successful. I can't however get a full or part time contract anywhere... no matter what I try.

Can anyone smarter than me help me out with thoughts, suggestions or career advice?

I need some stability in my income, as currently, I'm working to cover a frankly disastrous summer's worth of income.

@andycarolan Sell pre-paid buckets of hours with a minimum. And/or only work on retainer. Full time positions cost organizations far more than salary. Sub-contractors are attractive because it costs the organization far less and is a less complex relationship. You can help even out your revenue peaks and valleys by either of the above two models without adding the relationship complexity with the customer.

@cdevroe Thanks, I love the idea of buckets of hours. That's the first time I've heard of that as a concept.

I can quite easily put together a page on my site with that kind of info on... takes the guesswork out of hiring for a specific task.

@andycarolan It also cuts down on quoting/invoicing. Speeding up the process considerably.

Example:

  • 50 hours at $150.00/hr
  • 75 hours at $140.00/hr
  • 100 hours at $125.00/hr

@cdevroe Honestly, quoting people is the most difficult and time consuming part of my job.

lol — I wish I could quote the kinds of prices in your examples there haha.

@andycarolan I had great luck with Upwork short-term contracts turning into opportunities - not sure if that’s helpful.

@megsouth Thanks, I will take a look. The only similar thing I'm signed up to at the moment is CreativePool. I found a great client through there.

tldr,

@andycarolan Any local business groups where you could put in an appearance? When I had a bit of a sales role I found that to be best - just finding local people in businesses who meet regularly for breakfasts or similar and just networking.

@tldr Thanks for replying!

Yeah, I've done all that. I had very minimal success as far as business goes. Nothing long term, but a few little jobs here and there.

I've done bigger projects, all remotely, and very often with repeat business, but again, nothing permanent.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, maybe it's the nature of the industry. I'm honestly clutching at straws.

tldr,

@andycarolan Probably not you doing something wrong, more that you’re in an industry where a lot of work is outsourced to LCLs now. The old “oh, I know someone who knows someone” approach seems to be the only one that I see working still.

Certainly no easy solution. I’d love to go freelance too but totally lack the courage! I’m jealous you made the jump, even if you’re struggling right now.

Keep going, sir.

@tldr The “I know someone" approach is definitely where I get a lot of my work from. Perhaps I need to know more people haha

Well, I didn't so much as make the jump, but I fell into this career after becoming sick with ME/CFS (which I now manage fairly effectively) about 18 years ago. It's a long story for another time, but yeah lol.

Thanks!
