Keep getting error 404 when opening a remote lemmy community

Chances are it hasn't been federated by the instance yet. You can force it by using the search feature and searching @magazine@instance

So if you search @nix@lemmy.nix-community.org it should federate. It won't load old posts but anything new should show up.

Edit: this usually will work, but not in this case. I checked out the website itself and sorting by all communities rather than local only shows local posts, so maybe they completely disabled federation

I'm not sure I understand how to force it. The following doesn't work:

1. Click on the magnifying glass in the top right side
2. Write @nix in the search field

• This doesn't seem to find any magazines, just posts and threads

3. Re-try opening the magazine

• Still 404

I edited my post just as you were replying. I think they have completely disabled federation if that's even possible

Did a bit of testing and my guess is that they have their instance set to an Allowlist rather than a Blocklist. I couldn't get it to federate even on Lemmy instances. They may also be blocking all bots which would prevent other instances from properly finding their content. I remember there was a Lemmy instance that didn't federate with kbin properly because they banned bots using the blanket term bot, not realizing kbin uses the name kbinbot to communicate to other instances.
