New study says high housing costs, low income push Californians into homelessness

A new study by the University of California, San Francisco shows that homeless people in California were struggling with poor health and deep poverty before becoming homeless. The study released Tuesday by the Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative aims to provide a comprehensive picture of adult homelessness in a state that has 30% of the country's homeless. The representative survey of nearly 3,200 homeless adults found that their median household income was just $960 a month when they lost housing. The governor's administration on Tuesday also released details about a $4.68 billion bond to overhaul mental health services.

icicle12,

The situation here in CA is obviously not great, but to be honest I can't think of any good solutions to insanely high housing prices.

Too many people want to be here, so prices get pushed up. More units is the only real solution. Maybe build, subsidize or encourage high density residential? Even the bare lots are crazy expensive in the cities, so cheap housing would need to fit a lot of people per square foot.

Loosening zoning laws would help in some places (cough cough bay area).

icicle12,

You're probably right, and that's probably the best step we could take here in CA. Unfortunately, it's very challenging to implement from a political standpoint, as high density housing projects and loosening zoning laws are very politically unpopular items, so it would be hard to get passed. Plus, the people who are currently here benefit the most from high housing prices (since it makes their properties super valuable), so they'll obviously fight against any proposals that could meaningfully lower housing costs.

Personally I think CA needs something like building a bunch of cheap housing units outside a city’s limits and providing them with a social worker and public transportation for several months as they fiscally get back on their feet and battle any illness or addiction they have. Something reminiscent of Utah’s policies

It’s literally one of the most expensive states in the Union.
