just glanced at this tag and imagining if we applied this level of innovation and resources to neighborhood scale organic food systems or healing generational trauma

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

we could be figuring out how to cooperatively source half the food we eat within a 5 min walk or working to eliminate the root causes of violence and oppression buried deep in our psyches but instead we’ve decided to prioritize the burning of ancient carboniferous life forms in order to make inert parts poorly mimic basic human functions I do not get it

@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

the word technology means more than money and computers! it is not advancing technology to apply human ingenuity to harmful or meaningless inventions while denying catastrophic and unprecedented climate collapse

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

and I cannot emphasize this enough: we do not need machine learning to take meaningful action on climate. we need people to pull their heads out of their asses (careers) and apply their talents to creating different and better societies

@seachanger or listen to the nursing staff in cancer hospitals, instead of trying to drop in some irrelevant AI product.

My recent stay, in a cancer hospital, gave me so much admiration for everyone who works in one in any capacity, and how everything's design and form is obviously evolved from experience.

@seachanger speaking of cancer and money...my current understanding is that access to early diagnostics is the biggest challenge in cancer treatment. Especially for women.

kristinHenry,
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

@seachanger what if we took even a fraction of AI VC funding and put that into developing a painless mammogram?! Or mobile medical that gave free pap-exams across the country? The world?

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@kristinHenry Kristin we could be reengineering society to completely eliminate both the production of cancer-causing substances and also the social dysfunctions driving the stress and poverty responsible for chronic illness

kristinHenry,
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

@seachanger hpv is an easy one. and cheap. and it kills women. so, it pops up in my brain first.

Like, what is the one cheap maximum lifesaving thing I could do if I had funding? HPV vaccines and taking exams out to the people....like mobile library vans.

And yes, cancer is on my brain lately. I'm just over two weeks into post-op recovery. Doing great! Thanks to the care I've had access to.

When I ask medical staff about what's the one thing they'd do if they had funding? Early diagnostics!
