Okay, I need a 32" TV for my bedroom. #HDR is a MUST! anyone have any NON-#SAMSUNG suggestions? NO NEED for #DolbyVision. Prefer #LG, but just need #LCD/#OLED that can hang on wall. TV is ~10 ft from head of bed - if that makes a diff. Only using w/AppleTV 4k Gen2. No TV tuner requirement.

Suggestions? @joshua @tewha @lisamelton

@jann I just bought a big-ass LG 4K HDR set last month from Costco. And I love it! Costco and Amazon seem to have the best prices on LGs right now. I'm sure they have something in a size 32 for you.

Remember that the optimal viewing distance for a 4K set is 1.5x the diagonal of the screen. So you might want something much larger. If you're farther than 2x away you might as well get 1080p. Trust me on this.

Also, why no DolbyVision?

@lisamelton @joshua @tewha Thanks for the advice. To answer your Q’s:

No DV because I prefer open standards like HDR(10)/HDR(10)+. ffmpeg can rip and compress those (with . It can't deal with “hdr10plus_tool”… there's no ability to do that w/DV.

The 32" is mostly space. I have a corner on the wall I want it to go. If I do 40”, etc, it won't fit. Okay, so I guess I'll stay 1080p. Any replacement for my 1080p 32" samsung heh! I'll check LG at costco and check amazon too...thanks.

@jann Ah, physical size constraints on the wall. Gotcha.

As for DV transcoding, that works fine with FFmpeg and HandBrake now provided you use the correct codec.

Most 4K "Web DL" downloads from Uncle Torrance (you know who I mean) are in DV/HDR10 format now. That's been the case for at least a year.

And it's actually hard to buy a newer 4K TV set now that supports HDR10 and not DV.

@lisamelton @jann Wait — Handbrake can do DV??

jann,
@jann@twit.social avatar

@genecowan @lisamelton No, She's saying that Web DL are mostly in "hybrid" format and Handbrake redoes the HDR10 portion, and leaves DV alone. (I think, yes, Lisa?)

lisamelton,
@lisamelton@mastodon.social avatar

@jann No, that's not what I mean. 😀

@genecowan

jann,
@jann@twit.social avatar

@lisamelton @genecowan Ummm….okay.

Okay?

Okay. 😂

lisamelton,
@lisamelton@mastodon.social avatar

@genecowan Yes. That's been the case since version 1.6 or 1.7. Provided you use the x265 codec.

Support for HEVC color metadata is coming for other codecs this year.

@jann

jann,
@jann@twit.social avatar

@lisamelton @genecowan Wait. Don't understand. Handbrake is open source. They have NOT reverse-engineered DV, right? So how could they handle DV?

If I'm wrong, please let me know. But that's what I understood.

lisamelton,
@lisamelton@mastodon.social avatar

@jann It seems to work when I tried it, so... 🤷‍♀️

But the reality is that if you're transcoding and you only pulled the HDR10 metadata, then you're losing more information in the actual picture composition than in the color data.

TL;DR: don't obsess about avoiding DolbyVision inputs. Any quirks will be solved soon anyway.

@lisamelton @jann Well, all I know is that a file with only DV gives me a purple colored weirdness, and one with DV+HDR10 gives me HDR10. None end up with DV in the output.

lisamelton,
@lisamelton@mastodon.social avatar

@genecowan Ah. That might be why it's working for me. I don't actually have any DV-only inputs. Those are kind of rare, as far as I can tell.

Of maybe something else is going on. Who knows. 🤷‍♀️

"And it's actually hard to buy a newer 4K TV set now that supports HDR10 and not DV." You mean Samsung - which does NOT support DV, Lisa? 😂

@jann @joshua @tewha @lisamelton paid a fortune for an LG OLED a few years ago only to discover it doesn’t have the full rsnge of apps. Never again

jann,
@jann@twit.social avatar

@Willie1foot @joshua @tewha Oh, I love LG and don't need apps. I abs hate TVs with apps. They ALL spy on what you're watching on the TV. (LG and Samsung say this) the only way around that is to disable TV networking and hook up something like an AppleTV.

Willie1foot,
@Willie1foot@mastodon.au avatar

@jann @joshua @tewha Fair enough… but won’t the AppleTV spy on you in the same way?

jann,
@jann@twit.social avatar

@Willie1foot @joshua @tewha Nope. The "spying" I’m talking about is this: Samsung senses you turn to HDMI2 ... okay. It starts scanning that input and sees you changed to Friends. It then puts an ad to buy friends HERE...across the bottom of your screen.

Apple DOES know what you watch within AppleTV+ (PLUS! not ANY other app). I don't mind that. That is their "station”. I HATE the TV scanning what I watch on ANOTHER SOURCE.

@jann @tewha @joshua @lisamelton If you don’t need the tuner why not just get a monitor?

jann,
@jann@twit.social avatar

@kyozou @tewha @joshua @lisamelton I'd LOVE to get the 32" Apple monitor except for 2 things: 1: the price, and 2: you can't remove the stand!

@jann @joshua @tewha @lisamelton Mostly just China bashing. The same kind of stuff going on against DJI. TCL makes great TVs that aren't expensive. Worry more about your cell phone carrier. If you're worried about ANY "smart" TV doing evil things, just let them update the firmware once after you buy it, disconnect it from your local Net, and just stick with OTA and streaming in on the HDMI ports from your dongle of choice.

joshua,
@joshua@nozzi.social avatar

@jann Nothing recent I’m afraid. Our last purchase was your unfavorite brand and 82” four years ago. 😂

I only let it see a network once for firmware updates because it refused to honor the “please don’t let just anyone connect via BT” and the neighbor kept picking the wrong device for their audio out.
