Downtown streetcar records best ridership month since September 2019

The Milwaukee streetcar in 2023 continues to exceed its pandemic-impacted ridership from the previous three years, and reported 65,749 rides for July.

That puts The Hop system close to 300,000 rides for 2023. The numbers are still short of 2019, the streetcar’s first full year of service. But they are well ahead of its performance in 2020 through 2022 when the pandemic led to immediate drop-offs in activity, and then a lasting impact as more people regularly worked from home instead of in downtown office buildings.

July’s streetcar ridership represents an average of 2,121 riders per day, its best showing since September 2019. July and August have historically been the streetcar's strongest months as ridership is bolstered by festivals and other summer activity.
