I'll have to guess that it was cheaper and easier than the cost and fuss of a battery & compartment. The power needs of those early ones are almost negligible. I mean you can power a clock with the same type of display from a potato.

How to power a calculator from a potato.
(Note: the potato doesn't provide power, it's like whatever material separates the anode and cathode material in a regular battery)
