I really enjoyed this. The premise is that only animals have survived the zombie apocalypse, and what happens to the pets locked in houses, the zoo animals in the wrong areas, the wild animals, the animals used in science or product testing? This is told from their perspective and is pretty witty.
It would work for square 5A as it was her Debut work.
The book is so much better than the Pirates adaptation. I was looking for fantasy books a few years ago that didn’t have such a Eurocentric setting and stumbled across this. I liked Tim Powers so I read it and enjoyed it tremendously.
This was a fun book that is a bit of a challenge to read with a purpose. The main character is an incredibly minor son of the emperor and never expected to be anywhere near the throne. But through an accident he is suddenly the next in line and needs to become the new emperor and needs now to understand a ton of court machinations and players and it’s that information dump that the author purposely throws on you same as it’s being thrown on the new emperor to keep you as overwhelmed feeling.
T. Kingfisher is one of the more recent authors that joined the list of people I read first. She does 2 styles of fiction for older readers (she also does YA as Ursula Vernon), Horror and Fantasy (often but not always Romantasy). And they are both really well written and enjoyable.
