This is one of my favourote memorials in the Glasgow Necropolis. It's the gravestone of the theatre impresario John Henry Alexander who died in1851.

Alexander was a major figure in Glasgow theatre in the first half of the 19th Century, but he was also involved in a long-running fued with fellow theatre owner John Seymour.

At one point, both leased separate parts of the Caledonian Theatre on Dunlop Street and used to try their best to sabotage each others shows.

One favourite trick was for one to hire a brass band to perform in their part of the theatre when they knew the other was putting on a serious drama. The situation was eventually sorted by a magistrate who decreed that they each needed to run their performances on alternate nights.
