paysrenttobirds, in Shiny Leaf Coffee

The corner store on my block has a beautiful 8-foot tall indoor coffee tree that blooms each year. Not the same plant, or native, lol, but the picture made me think of it.

cheeze,

That’s awesome, do they get coffee from it?

paysrenttobirds,

They said it made very few berries, unfortunately. It got good ambient light, but no particular grow lighting or anything

Is it called that because it looks similar to a coffee plant or because it also makes a decent beverage?

EDIT: nvm. I was too curious to wait for a response.

This is not a coffee substitute (Pinkley 1969; Austin 2004). Its common name is may be a reference to some visual similarity to coffee

cheeze,

Haha yeah I’ve read that it could technically be brewed into a terrible coffee but that it will cause headaches.

very nice thanks for posting!

FlagonOfMe, in Ratibida pinnata (Yellow Coneflower) with a TINY HOVERFLY!

That’s a fly, not a bee. Probably a hover fly. There are many insects that cosplay as bees.

feralsapiens,

"there are many insects that cosplay as bees" 🐝🤣
So stealing this, genius!

sweetholymosiah,

interesting thanks!

cheeze, in Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Milkweed)

Those look great! I planted some of them this year from seeds and they sure are taking their sweet time

paysrenttobirds, in Purple Coneflower with a BEE!

Very nice! Mine didn’t be come up this year after a good show last summer. They are perennials, right? Any tips?

sweetholymosiah,

I lost 1 of 3 plants this year. They were planted last year as tiny plugs. I’m not sure what happened other then I think I stepped right on one early this spring. I do know they like it really dry and well drained. If you are sitting on clay or wet soil, the root will rot and not come back.

paysrenttobirds,

Ah, clay strikes again. Thanks!

KenpoAj, in Monarda fistulosa (wild bergamot / bee balm)

One of my favorites! I have the red variety here, and have a mixed color seed packet i didnt get around to planting this year. I love the flavor of the flowers and leaves in tea! If you’re sick with any sort of sinus thing, tea with beebalm clears it out almost instantly, and keepy you clear while drinking the tea, and up to 15 mins after.

The plant tastes like oregano with a hint of an orange citrus taste.

paysrenttobirds, in Cornus alternifolia (Pagoda Dogwood)

Beautiful! Can you say where this is native to?

sweetholymosiah,

Eastern North America - mostly around the great lakes and Atlantic regions.
