Hi, sorry if that title isn't very clear. I just started learning about nix a couple days ago; I'll explain what I mean....
So, I got into NixOS and installed it on a VPS a few days ago. I’ve previously used yunohost.org (a debian based all-in-one selfhosting solution) and docker-compose. But I (now) really like the Nix(OS) approach, the amount of packaged software and how everything ties together in a clean server configuration....
I’ve been messing around with nix flakes to configure my NixOS system and to put the final touches on I wanted to write an overlay of Neovim with the plugins and everything configured with Lua and then use this overlay to install neovim-qt. After reading various docs on Overlays, I get the fundamentals but I don’t get where...
I’ve been using Nix and NixOS for 4 years now. While I like using it for my PCs and tried using it for servers with success, I think its ecosystem still is immature for development and production purposes, and thus my passion for Nix has faded....
I hope this is the right place to ask. I am new to Nix and trying to use it for now as a universal package manager. I installled Stremio using Nix but the app doesn’t work properly. I see that it’s several versions out of date. The same app works fine using Flatpak. Is there a way to let the maintainer know? I’d also love...
I need to generate a number of scripts in my configuration and make them into a single package (for ease of reference, because there are a lot of them)....
I couldn’t find a nix community, so I’m hoping it is ok that I’m posting on the nixos one instead. I’ll switch to mailing list/discord if necessary, but I have a lemmy app on my phone, and it is much easier to have an ongoing conversation from here, so I decided to give it a shot. Here goes!...
First of all, I’m completely new to Nix and I have no idea what I’m doing. I would like to use it initially as a more general purpose replacement of conda environments for my AI-development workflow. To begin with, I’d like to install nix package manager at my work server where I don’t have root access. I tried...
I’m a semi-recent NixOS user and one thing that bothers me since the beginning is that when I change the Gnome theme (between light and dark), Firefox doesn’t adapt. The system theme in Firefox is enabled, but it always displays the light theme, no matter what theme is selected in Gnome....
Hello, does anyone know about how to run a kbin instance on NixOS? Will the steps on https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/wiki#admin-guide (but replacing the apt installs with adding packages in configuration.nix) just work, or is there a better, more reproducible way?...
So I have been experiencing screen blackout when I use any refresh rate above 60Hz. On Arch I was able to solve this by setting a udev rule as mentioned in this ArchWiki article but it seems like I can’t do the same in NixOS using the traditional way. Is there anything I need to add in the configuration.nix file to achieve the...
Does NixOS have a way to PXE many machines via a kickstart or preseed equivalent? I’m curious to experiment with it in the context of a University environment and we use either Cobbler or Foreman for host provisioning....
Recently, I switched to NixOS and realised that there is no G’MIC plugin package for Krita....
I’ve seen people use nix-doom-emacs, have it set up standalone, and some have fancy Nix code that’s way beyond my understanding for now to set it up. Which one is the recommended way to set it up? Also, how do you get completions in nix-mode?
Yesterday I tried to update my nix flake but the rebuild-switch failed when it came time to install the following python3 derivation with some extra python packages:...
I’m developing a small library which intercepts some library calls from a program installed via home-manager. My library works fine outside of nix, but it fails when trying to intercept calls from a program installed via home-manager. I figured that it is related to hardcoded library paths in my interceptor library....
I’d like to set a “global” option from within a submodule, but the config I return is grafted into the “global” under the submodule “path” rather than at the root… any idea if it’s somehow possible?...
I’m trying to debug a module I’m writing with builtins.trace, but it’s being more complicated than I anticipated....
I’m migrating my NAS to nixos, and I got to the point of setting up my restic backups....
Im just starting out in my nixos journey. This thought came to me in the shower: would nixOS lend itself for a phone OS?
I have a personal source project I created a shell.nix file for. However, in the project I have also scripts I want to execute periodically non-interactively. Could I use the nix-shell shebang pointing to shell.nix file in order to have the same programs when I use nix-shell interactively and when I launch the scripts?
