When did Newsweek turn into a right wing rag?

JaymesRS,

Around 2018 when they were bought by IBT Media. They try to toe the line to seem less biased, but it’s not hard to see in the choice of topics covered and the rigor they apply (though their fact checking was never great).

I haven't approved of anyone I've ever voted for in a presidential election, and maybe twice in other elections including the one where my dad was running for town council. It's not like I actually have a choice.

I respect that, but you can still make that known at the polls with write-in, with third party, or just scrawling "fuck all y'all" over the ballot.

Even if it doesn't lead to someone winning, every one of the above does get recorded. Every year mickey mouse gets a fraction of the vote, and lets be real, if Mickey ever got 5% of the vote, every candidate would be announcing their runs at Disney World with the hope they could attract just half that group.

If you do nothing at the polls, everyone will assume you don't care and don't care back.

If you do something at the polls, that doesn't help either party, then the two other parties might actually be incentivized to get your vote doing things you DO care about. You at least show up, so you are someone they should care about.

If for no other reason, it's a record of someone flipping the bird to everyone in power, a small act of defiance that can't make it back to you because voting is anonymous. If you're really that powerless the process should only take 5 minutes because the lines to the polls will be short.

vote vote vote. even if it's "none of the above"

I sincerely doubt they give a shit about it.

The reason I vote is because my mom would disown me if I don't. Expecting it to make a difference disheartened me so much I have given up any chance of it doing anything.

If I want to flip the middle finger to people in power I'll blow up a building or something. At least that would look cool.

Dukeofdummies,

I sincerely doubt they give a shit about it.

I mean, they definitely won't give a shit if you don't vote. If anything it simplifies their math. If you don't show up if you're mad or sad you sure as hell won't show up if you're glad. So you can be safely ignored.

Biden already gives a shit about ~20% uncommitted in Minnesota, ~10% uncommitted in Michigan in the last primaries. nope, uncommitted didn't win but they're freaking out high ranking Democrats. There are more uncommitted than the percentage he won by in some of these states. They didn't win but now a LOT more politicians are struggling to dismiss Palestine. Hell Pelosi was out and out accusing protestors of being shills for China and Russia last week.

Democrats are currently avoiding college campuses for appearances because they realize how unpopular this war in Gaza is.

showing that there is a voting population that is unhappy carries weight, and it sticks around for years to come. It's a record just like the census.

I’ve been voting for 24 years and each time I think they give even less of a shit.

Also, voting doesn’t tell them what I think, just which asshole I hate less.

Tolookah,

Worthwhile note: HarrisX polls rank poorly to fivethirtyeight. Not saying this is bad data, but not great data.

TransplantedSconie,

Polls are worthless.

What matters is your vote. Get registered, get to the polls, and vote.

Words can have multiple meanings. In this case (definitions respective to the order they were used in the comment you’re quoting):

  1. Poll (noun): a questioning or canvassing of persons selected at random or by quota to obtain information or opinions to be analyzed
  2. Poll (noun): the place where votes are cast or recorded —usually used in plural

At some point if all the polls are saying Biden’s not doing too well, repeating “polls don’t matter” becomes dangerous. Sticking your head in the sand instead of pressuring Biden to do better to defeat fascist Trump is incredibly privileged.

What are some specific things Biden could do better that are also within his sole power to do? And before you reply, no, I will not look at your Twitter account or “just Google it and see for myself”. I’m asking you a question: use your words to answer.

Hit the road! Not just in swing states but every state, especially into black and brown communities and talk to the people. He also needs to do more in depth interviews live, none of this pre-recorded softball question staged crap. Publicly speak out against the Kroger Albertsons merger and fight to block it. Call for a ceasefire and stop funding the slaughter of children. Lower prescription drug prices for ALL not just seniors.

This is just a start. There’s a lot more he can do but relying on “But Trump” is not enough. Voters are tired of hearing about Trump and want actual change that will improve their lives. The people are struggling.

I’ll partially agree with you there. However, election season or not, he’s the incumbent and still has a job to do. I’d prefer he focus on that. Even if he was out campaigning more, then the narrative would be “Biden spends all his time campaigning, not doing his job”. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t.

Publicly speak out against the Kroger Albertsons merger and fight to block it.

His administration is doing exactly that.

Lower prescription drug prices for ALL not just seniors.

Not within his sole power to do. The reductions for seniors are via the Inflation Reduction Act which allows the government/Medicare to negotiate drug prices. Unless we get Medicare for All, that’s about all the government can reasonably do to lower prescription drug prices. While MFA would be awesome, it’s not within his power to do either.

There’s a lot more he can do but relying on “But Trump” is not enough. Voters are tired of hearing about Trump and want actual change that will improve their lives.

Considering those are the only two candidates (3rd parties are spoilers in the US - don’t kid anyone into thinking otherwise), “But Trump” should be enough (for the general election, anyway).

Those are our choices, like it or not. And one is unarguably worse than the other. Much worse.

Perfect cannot be the enemy of good.

juicy,

Butcher Biden isn’t “good.” He’s evil, just less evil than Trump. He needs to step aside and let someone else represent the Democratic Party.

mojofrododojo,

Butcher Biden

“oh that’s only supposed to be for the primary to scare him.” boy that bullshit evaporated quick.

tell you what, propose a candidate that’s better. I’ll wait. otherwise this is just fud, more fud from trumpies trying to get biden off because they KNOW THEY’LL LOSE AGAIN.

fucking losers

For being “the most important election of our lives” (for the 50th time) and also “the end of democracy if Trump wins”, Biden should be going at 1,000% then. All I hear are excuses why it’s too hard and how the all powerful Republicans block everything the Dems do. Funny how Republicans get a lot of what they want even when Dems control things.

🤦‍♂️

So he’s not telling you what you already know enough? I don’t get what you’re complaining about here.

All I hear are excuses why it’s too hard and how the all powerful Republicans block everything the Dems do

What “excuses”? You can go to the House and/or Senate website and look at the votes for any bill. There’s no excuses, just numbers.

Funny how Republicans get a lot of what they want even when Dems control things.

It’s really not, though. Dems are willing to compromise to get something done and R’s will bury their heels and won’t budge unless they get exactly what they want (and then demand more or just vote against their own bills because it might make the D’s look good). And that’s when R’s are even trying to do anything other than obstruct while saying “see? government doesn’t work”

With the former, we at least get something (even if it’s not perfect) and the latter gets us nothing (except tax cuts for the rich).

return2ozma,
@return2ozma@lemmy.world avatar

Then I look forward to Biden fighting for universal healthcare, legalizing marijuana, getting rid of for profit prisons, raising the minimum wage to at least $20, guaranteed housing for all, breaking up Amazon, and more.

These are things Sanders was running on in 2016, nearly a decade ago.

ptz,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

And?

Bernie’s not the nominee in 2024. Biden is.

Instead of constantly negging on the lesser of two evils and sowing apathy, you could try putting your efforts toward congressional candidates who could actually fix many of these problems.

return2ozma,
@return2ozma@lemmy.world avatar

We have no control over that. I’m in California. We tried to get somewhat Progressive Katie Porter to the Senate but corporate centrist Schiff, funded by right-wing AIPAC, was forced in.

xmunk,

Polls are definitely not worthless, I agree… but this poll is confusing as fuck. Post SOTU polling showed the speech in highly favorable terms and the GOP response was extremely underwhelming… even here on lemmy there was a pretty positive response from the more progressive people.

On the whole I’m just confused how an overall positive response could result in lower favorability.

xmunk,

Polls are informative. I will be voting for Biden in the general election or whoever the democrat is, but if Biden is struggling it’s good to know that to pressure him to do better. Your response reeks of the awful Clinton messaging that got Trump elected.

return2ozma,
@return2ozma@lemmy.world avatar

Biden’s approval rating currently stands at 37.4 percent, the lowest since he recorded an average of 37.6 percent in December 2023, according to poll aggregator FiveThirtyEight’s national average calculations.

Biden’s disapproval rating is at 56.5 percent, giving the president a net disapproval score of 19.2 points—both of which are record markers of disapproval for the president.

The average ratings come amid long-standing concerns Biden has faced about his struggling poll numbers and a lack of enthusiasm for the 81-year-old’s reelection bid.

mojofrododojo,

538 is useless. they overpredicted trump consistently throughout the primaries. I don’t understand why anyone gives them the time of day.
