He had worked on his contribution for almost half a year, finding a home for it at the Columbia Law Review after a shorter web piece he had written for the Harvard Law Review had been blocked at the last minute"

"So successful has white supremacist patriarchy been at convincing white women especially that they’re lucky to live in the U.S. and not Saudi Arabia or Iran, that so many white women did not pay enough attention to the theocracy that white supremacy was building right here at home. It was being built by white men who look like their fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons, not the scary brown Muslim men with beards, right?"

Two party democracies aren't great democracies. And democracies where elected reps jump ship to rival parties after winning the election are allowed to continue in office aren't sound democracies either. Ideology is at the centre of the process & there has to be room for nuance as well as consistency. People should be able to say, if not this person, then we'd rather support that person. Or, that we prefer a third or fourth or fifth party, or a coalition, to either of the two major parties.

Have you read Syed Muhammad Ashraf's The Silence of the Hyena?
There's a story about deer (barasingha?). There's a fight to death between 2 males. It's a story that really shifted how I thought about violent 'species'. +

anniezaidi,
@anniezaidi@mastodon.social avatar

I thought of deer as non-violent or gentle. I suppose because they eat grass instead of other animals. But they're not, are they? We think of hyenas as abject & sly. But read the stories about the hunting of the hyena here & again, things shift. Read the story about the bull, (the neela) & the corruption of a creature's spirit.

'THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM IS NOT A BEAR'
"I’m a solo woman stuck in a forest with an angry man...There’s no time to think, so I operate on instinct. My task is ridiculously complex. I need to deescalate any signs of aggression, guide the man into a state of emotional balance, and exit the situation safely, all at once...
I’ve been in this position so many times... Sometimes, it’s not that I’m afraid of men; I’m just really, really tired."

The most irritating thing about the "Shop like a billionaire" ad jingle is my keen awareness that billionaires buy aircraft and politicians & their shopping tends to overthrow the people's mandate. They do not go looking for cute £2 T-shirts saying 'I take after my grandma'.

Things changed in September 2023. The much-loved shrine acquired a new meaning in Malgaon – a small but loud group of young men claimed it was an encroachment. They had been egged on by a coalition of Hindutva groups."
