This woman is a true Arizona Wonder! Reading through her essay today ranging from the terribly sad loss of her dog to her regular PUSD (Peoria Unified School District) board meeting reports - what a capsule of a public servant and all 'round great person. I hope you can read her article today without a paywall. I get weekly emails from her website. Secular Arizona

The Brothers Grimm Did Much More Than Tell Fairy Tales.

A recent discovery in a Polish library of 27 books that were thought to have been lost sheds light on the breadth of the German scholars’ work.

Dodged a “big one” dropping phone face down in the driveway and drove off, not realizing. Drove back in a hurry 20 minutes later to find it exactly between where my car is parked next to son’s. If I hadn’t been looking I could have run it over. Shattered glass screen protector but phone glass is fine! The high temperature warning was on cuz Arizona afternoon already over 105°.

I recommend this brand protector. Has 3 pack cheap AND a great covers for the 3 lenses camera. https://a.co/d/9WAZzhv

New to our family, sandwich rolls: lavash, mayo, lettuce, prosciutto, havarti cheese. I am trying to find foods Drew can eat since he is not using his left hand very often. Regular sandwiches are a mess since he can’t tell the strength of his grip in his right hand. A firm hold means the sandwich filling falls out. Same for burgers now. Yay for Trader Joe’s lavash - only $2.49 for a large package. 2 pieces for 8 rolls. And it worked well.

PS Anyone else having trouble finding food that a person with or can eat, feeding themselves? Since my son is losing more and more dexterity due to declining, he still wants his favorite foods in the way he has always had them yet he really can't deal with using his hands much at the same time he needs a special larger, round spoon to eat. About 1/2 of his meals the caregiver has to finish by feeding him.

cobalt,
@cobalt@awscommunity.social avatar

We had Neuro OT for him for almost 6 years until he started having too many hospitalizations. For insurance coverage he has to be “stable”. Neuro OT is specifically for those who have cognitive challenges as well as physical, so both brain and muscles are exercised. We don’t need adaptive dinnerware now but easy to eat and drink foods. As dementia progresses chewing and swallowing become more difficult. But he still is hungry like a hardworking man!

cobalt,
@cobalt@awscommunity.social avatar

@mycrowgirl Yes! Both! And also any tips on strategies to coax eating more food when his brain gets tired and stops eating because it’s too much work. We learned if he stops using his spoon, to load it for him. Then if he stops again we offer to feed him. It’s clear he’s hungry but frustrated at the work to eat. I think I’m asking what every caregiver thinks about when seeing declines with and .

Hey Y’all! We did it! Funds donated and Ant’s family moving now!!! UPDATE: “THANK YOU for helping us, beautiful people. Just got back from picking up the keys. The moving process will begin in the next 48hrs. Real talk, folks. THANK YOU for your patronage and kindness. A lot of changes coming as there's downsizing and more to figure out with getting our son moved into college, but that's a task for tomorrow.”

Oh I just had to share. We are at the last of May in Phoenix and I know in just 2-3 weeks the heat wave may come so hot we can’t go swimming. But for now, even seeing the water rippling in the sunlight is a joy. #Phoenix #Water #Pool #Ripples

Backyard swimming pool just showing the water moving in ripples and small waves towards the camera. It’s all aqua tones with the sun bright and highlights from the moving water.

Yay, still May and arbors finished in time for a light roof over to shade the cactus and succulent plants against the wall. The large pots are for the star jasmine vines that are supposed to grow up into the arbors. Shade cloth is clamped to the arbor roof and draped over racks so it doesn’t lay on the plants. Lots of clamps for the shade cloth because we get wild wind gusts in Phoenix. I’m hoping for one more bloom of the flowers before the vines are in survival mode for the heat wave coming.

Home Econ.
Anyone heard of this? And for bonus points, participated?
I’ve thought since I was a young adult that those experiences absolutely helped me out in running a household. And I am sure most young adults now have very little experience to help them out in even basic tasks.
Here’s an example: not one of the caregivers I’ve had under the age of 30 knew how to use a can opener.

cobalt,
@cobalt@awscommunity.social avatar

@quoidian yay for that much, at least! I had a young male caregiver this year that opened cans by repeatedly jamming a knife along the rim. I shrieked for him to stop. When I showed him how to use the can opener he was astonished and very excited. I have been teaching common home skills to most caregivers my son has had.

Boosted and shared. One simply must know of My Lai, a horrific event of the US Vietnam War. Decades later it can’t be forgotten. Yet now in Gaza there have been so many similar horrors, also officially silenced. There will be no Lieutenant Thompson to bear witness. https://mastodon.me.uk/@garius/110033106139765776

@cobalt@awscommunity.social avatar

Halp! I realized yesterday that it’s now so hot and sunny in Phoenix that I have to complete my plan to get a light roof over the arbors where the jasmine vines are growing. Hoping tomorrow my son will help me a fix the fiberglass panels up top. Meanwhile, I’m trying 40% sun shade cloth clamped on. The supports in front of the 3 giant pots are cheap clothes racks. I need help to raise the other 2 up high like on the left. So my ? is: any other ideas on potted plants surviving heat waves.
