Kevin Costner begging for money to make a four-part Western epic is honestly the best reason for him to stop doing Yellowstone.

Closing in on 25k views of the Google post. I’m sure that’s nothing if you’re The Verge, but those are impressive numbers for a guy who just changed his share buttons to be more passive aggressive.

Oh, they know. They only think in quarterly profits, though.

I asked Google "who ruined Google" and they replied honestly using their AI, which is now forced on all of us. It's too funny not to share!

I don't get Threads.

I don't get why it's popular.

I don't know why it exists.

The frustrating thing about having a post go viral is that it overshadows the other things you’re working on. But on the other hand, maybe two posts might go viral at the same time? A blogger can dream, right?

Damn, today’s email got cut off in Gmail. Just barely missed the line. Hope folks get to the end!

A few years ago, a Reddit user asked for help in finding a “BOTTOM trackball,” which is an anecdote perfect for explaining how completely the optical mouse defeated the mechanical one.

Here’s how it happened: https://tedium.co/2024/05/19/optical-mouse-history-evolution/

A lot to this story—which takes us through both Xerox AND HP R&D shops, briefly namedrops the Logitech Scanman, and has to uncomfortably deal with the fact that the guy who first commercialized the optical mouse is now a prominent anti-vaxxer.

It’s a good story. It’s a little longer than usual. And it includes one reference to an 18-button mouse.

@dsilverman It’s surprising they didn’t go mainstream sooner honestly. I think Apple choosing to favor the ball mouse is a big reason for that.

The Google piece is within about 100 visits of being my biggest piece of the year thus far, which is nuts.

Meanwhile, I’m kind of slow-rolling the weekend piece knowing that that piece is still going nuts. It’s looking pretty good, though. I will share tomorrow morning.

Official, just crossed over. (Glad to see a post do well without the help of Hacker News.)

My recent piece on the moment of turnabout that led Intel to launch the PCI standard is up as a syndicated piece over at IEEE Spectrum: https://spectrum.ieee.org/intel-pci-history

The “Intel Inside” marketing label was not limited to the processors, as it turned out.

I feel like people are so set against Google that they will not even agree that Google has good ideas sometimes.

Dealing with people frothing at the mouth because you dared defend something about AMP, for example, is tiring.

Just admit what it is: like every other big company, a mix of great and questionable.

Meanwhile I'm going to honor good ideas no matter the source.

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

@jens I didn’t bring up AMP for Web, I brought up AMP for Email, which is one of the few attempts to modernize email that has had any traction whatsoever. It was in context of a thread on how to modernize email.

I even said: “I think AMP for Email has some great ideas but bad branding. It could be a useful starting point for this discussion.”

The reason I said this is because people absolutely lose their shit because they conflate AMP for Email with AMP for Web.

This is my annual reminder that Tailor Brands is a bad company and if you’re starting an LLC, they are a bad choice. I canceled my services with them and went with a local company that specializes in LLCs to manage my registered agent, and I will end up saving $400 per year by doing so.

Don’t let the pretty website designs fool you—those are the ones that will charge you an arm and a leg. When signing up for an LLC, you want a website that looks ugly.

@neopostmodern Sadly, no. Ray Ozzie has it but he didn’t get back to me.

If anyone else wants to give him a nudge, I’d welcome it
