Our gas fired instantaneous water heater is being replaced by an electric heat pump water heater tomorrow. Very tired of this one, it’s been a lemon. Those white vent pipes are going away. No combustion, no vent pipes. Also that cylinder with grey rocks (acid neutralizer) also going away. No combustion, no acid. New water heater will be an AOSmith 80 gallon tank water heater. It will cool our often hot garage, which will be a nice plus.

Innards of tankless water heater. Lots of components and wires.

The new one is in the house! (but not yet installed). It’s big. Today they’re installing all the piping and putting it in place (need to attach it to the wall because of earthquakes). Tomorrow they’ll run the 220 V line and get it operating.

Another dumb canard about renewables bites the dust. 2024. Wind power and solar photovoltaics found to have higher energy returns than fossil fuels. Nature Energy doi: 10.1038/s41560-024-01520-y. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41560-024-01520-y

@GreenFire Costs are still coming down fast!

jgkoomey,
@jgkoomey@mastodon.energy avatar

@GreenFire That’s one reason why we need to stop new fossil fuel development!
Green, Fergus, Olivier Bois von Kursk, Greg Muttitt, and Steve Pye. 2024. "No new fossil fuel projects: The norm we need." Science. vol. 384, no. 6699. pp. 954-957. [https://www.science.org/doi/abs/10.1126/science.adn6533]

@GreenFire There are many ways to make fossil fuels less profitable. Pass laws! Change regulations! Change norms! Ban new natural gas hookups. Charge higher fees for current extraction on federal lands, don’t renew leases, and don’t put out any new leases. Crack down on fossil pollution (air water and land).

@GreenFire What does that have to do with what I posted? Biden struck the right tone, other Dems should mimic him but hit harder.

jgkoomey,
@jgkoomey@mastodon.energy avatar

@GreenFire Assuming that the Dems know what they’re doing is not really justified, although in some cases they do. Criticism that results in making the Dems more effective at crushing the GOP electorally is a good thing. Too often Dems are far too timid.

jgkoomey,
@jgkoomey@mastodon.energy avatar

@GreenFire The goal needs to be crushing the entire GOP electorally, not eking out a win.

jgkoomey,
@jgkoomey@mastodon.energy avatar

@GreenFire @barney No, you are putting words in my mouth. I’m saying Dems should play to win, not play to not lose. In poker, when you’re dealt 4 aces, you bet aggressively, and that’s what dems should do here. First, they need to run candidates EVERYWHERE, from dog catcher on up. Second, they need to run ads with video of REPUBLICANS stating that Trump should withdraw if convicted. Third, they should refer to him as a convicted felon at every opportunity.

Does anyone remember rents ever coming down? I don't, but I've only been renting for about 20 years, and I know other countries have things like rent control.

jgkoomey,

@Rhube @Nerdfest In some places they have. Oakland, for example. If you build more housing, prices drop!

@AndyDeardentsa @Rhube @Nerdfest Data here. Oakland is not a cheap place to live, but they’ve built a lot of apartments recently and it’s having an effect. https://www.rent.com/california/oakland-apartments/rent-trends

Nuclear industry, get your act together. If you can build plants on time and on budget, we’ll build more. If you can’t, we won’t. It’s that simple. And it’s not really worth talking about nuclear as an option until you can build plants on time and on budget. https://www.eenews.net/articles/after-vogtle-whats-next-for-nuclear/

The idea that a professional society is taking away a doctor’s right to practice medicine based on that doctor’s political speech criticizing powerful corporate interests is really dark. This is how fascism happens, folks. And guess what? A doctor fighting polluting industries IS doing the right thing for public health, so such speech should be celebrated! The sooner we phase out fossil fuels, the better. https://social.coop/@afewbugs/112308777582728316

@mrchrisadams Utilities are pulling wild ass guesses out of the air to justify what they want to do already. The problem is that figuring out these claims takes time, but by then some utilities will have railroaded their PUCs into keeping or building unnecessary fossil plants. https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/interactive/2024/data-centers-internet-power-source-coal/

jgkoomey,
@jgkoomey@mastodon.energy avatar

@mrchrisadams Unfortunately, the power imbalance between PUCs and utilities is big. Utilities are very powerful local and statewide players, so they can manipulate media and narratives to serve their interests. This is one reason why PUCs should prevent utilities from using ratepayer money for lobbying.
