I only just found this but, in case you're still testing things, here's a couple of hints:
it is possible to navigate in the dark;
it is possible to climb even without stairs, so you can usually get out of subterranean pits even tool-less; it's extremely rare to get into an actual “save-ender” situation
as your tech level progresses, you'll discover ways to automate most things;
do focus on getting ore; there are hints in the rock to where it may be.
@TheHobbyist this has been for a long while the idea behind Wine, but it's one of those things that so far has never worked in practice. If the game or other program works fine under Wine, and people use it anyway, developers actually have no incentive to make a native port. And any improvements to the support typically comes from the Wine (or Proton) developers, with little or no support from the original developers. So in the end it really doesn't seem to be working as expected in that sense.
