Dear friends, first - did you know I run a web conference, and it's a fully grown teenager now?

Tickets are on sale: https://2023.ffconf.org

More importantly, we have a scholarship programme that we've been running for years where we cover: ticket, travel and hotel (as required): https://ffconf.org/scholarship/

Please share this with ppl who would benefit 🙏

If anyone is looking for a Christmas present for an (oldie) loved one, or perhaps for yourself (something I tend to do these last few years) - I've got 5 or so Gameboys looking for homes - https://retrobyrem.uk/tag/ips/ (prefers UK buyers) (I do also have two GBAs, but just "enquire" to get photos and price)

This is mine (pic) 😍

This is bit of a stretch ask, and, possibly very vague, but - I've been trying (and struggling) to find potential speakers for that can talk on the subject of "how to think critically / being sceptical".

Ideally wanting UK based, but can stretch to Europe.

Any suggestions?

This is a really good talk by @brianleroux talking on subjects that I've been thinking about for years - how do you actually sensibly maintain projects for a decade or more, and why does dev have to be so complicated (spoiler: it doesn't). https://mas.to/@schizanon/111110541667851292 Definitely worth the watch 👍

Our CFP is officially open. Add your voice to 2024's https://ffconf.org/cfp

Impressively I completely fucked up the url over on twitsir, overwhelming response point it out (1 person) - I guess the AI bots aren't useful for that.

We've extended our scholarship deadline - if you're in the UK and are part of an unrepresented group, is available to you - full details here: https://ffconf.org/scholarship/ (please share either via boots/or in person ❤️ )

I'm grateful for having met and hung out with Molly over a decade ago now (I want to say in those Opera days). She was a Force (and I'll recall partly responsible for me missing a flight home from Sweden after one of my early speaking gigs in 2009 - some way too late drinking 😂).

She was definitely in the thick of the Open Web, and I hope you take a moment to learn about her.

https://2023.ffconf.org is live for ticket acquisition!

1/2 the sessions are up, and I'm still carefully going through CFPs and potential ideas to make for an excellent day to help make our web, and web work, better.

I'd love to see you in November in Brighton 💗

It's anti bullying week (I'm guessing just in the UK, but hopefully worldwide). I was bullied throughout nearly all of my highschool and I've got bits of memories where it was bad, but mostly the loneliness and shame. I wish there was something positive to come, or advice I'd be able to give, but I don't. It was a matter of survival until it passed which is the shittiest advice there is.

Still. I've got odd socks on. For all that's worth....

There's a lot of strong submissions to the @ffconf 2023 CFP.

If you're new or fresh to the industry, or an old hand who has stories to tell, please take a look at our CFP and our promise to all our speakers: https://ffconf.org/articles/cfp/

Observation: I absolutely wouldn't build a long term project using Nextjs without having full time development resource able to perpetually support the project.

Why? The API surface changes way too much and often.

A project like JS Bin, 16 years old, would have required constant support ALL of the time to keep it running.

Instead, it used express, which is a relatively "basic" pattern, but the complexity hasn't changed.

I enjoy Next for quick and dirty, but decade+… I don't think so.

I've been wanting to see if this was possible… and it totally was. I can play the Switch Gameboy games … with a Gameboy (which, frankly, is pointless, but hey!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9gX9qlfynE

Is anyone using the menu tag instead of ul in things like navigation?

JS Bin turned 15 years old today (context: I authored it).

I know the "cool kids" probably don't use it so much these days, but it's still pretty active (and drumroll…stable).

I still want to rewrite it from the ground up, but it's on a list that's already pretty long!

What's your favourite card game (with a normal deck of cards) for more than 2 players?

rem, to random

I've accidentally been paying for a midjourney subscription for several months (after trying out to play with images with the kids).

So now, I've started feeding spam email subject titles into it. Annoyingly I can't only generate 1 image, so I have to upscale the first one.

Weird thread incoming…

Look, this blog post is essentially: vitest did the job, but I added some fluff to that sentence and made a whole page. Go read it (if you so feel inclined...or don't...) https://remysharp.com/2024/06/07/adding-tests-to-a-typescript-next-trpc-project-without-the-faff
