Anthony Bourdain and his love of Glasgow ♥️ RIP

"I fell in love with Glasgow immediately on my first visit. I was barely off the train and within minutes was called a “c**t”. Though pretty much the worst thing you can call anybody in America, here, in Glasgow, I found, it was in a casual expression of affectionate—useful in nearly every social situation."

That thing is happening again when I open twitter and it's all tweets announcing the death of the account holder and I've never heard of them, is this what "For You" means for me 💀🤣

When I have afternoon tea I like to alternate between sweet and savoury, this can cause disagreements!

See when you have some form of success a wee bit later in life, people's reactions are very informative lol

Knowing how to ask for help is such an underrated skill, I see this so often in work and on the web, folk who disadvantage themselves so severely by not doing it effectively

Thinking about this again I'm reminded that among the competing theories about why britain had an unprecedented and still unmatched upsurge in progressive politics after the second world war (resulting in the welfare state, public housing, healthcare etc etc) is one holding that rich people being forced into the same spaces and experiences as poor people during the war caused it, I would not be at all surprised if it was one of the primary factors tbh

These days whenever I'm in a pub like stereo in glasgow where they've had gender neutral toilets for many years, it strikes me over again how utterly dishonest transphobic "feminism" is

It's one of the safest pubs in the city, because they've actively, intentionally cultivated it as a safe environment largely through inclusion

The idea that policing people's bodies to decide which toilet they can have a piss in would somehow make some of us safer is such manipulative nonsense

If you'd like to avoid catching or spreading the various plagues that are cuttin about at the minute, why you can do that by popping a mask on your face, remember masks!? lol this collective amnesia is wild 💀

I don't often talk about sexism even though it's obvs rife in tech, partly because I'm a white woman and you know, I'm doing ok, there are much more marginalised groups I think we should be prioritising.

HOWEVER, I can confidently say at this point that the most prevalent and damaging instances of sexism I've experienced in the workplace have been from men who considered and presented themselves as innocuous or even feminist.

One thing I won't miss when I stop working is making a learning resource, and people (men) deciding not to follow all of my instructions then interpreting their failure to make the thing work as a problem with my learning resource

I am sick of that shit TBQH

I had on the telly news last night and they were discussing whether the conviction will affect Trump positively or negatively in the election, and some pundit said Trump's Christian base would need to consider whether they could support someone who associated with a sex worker

That's their takeaway from this story.......

I'd like back all the hours I've spent over the years trying figure out the correct incantations of quotation marks and escape characters to get computers to do what I want with some text.

This increasingly common experience on shopping sites baffles me:

  • Searches for a thing, gets lots of almost identical results
  • Opens one, nah it's definitely not what I want, returns to search
  • Gets even more of the thing I've decided I don't want
  • Tweaks the query in an attempt to get something different
  • More of the same
  • Leaves

How is this good for business? Do these companies no longer understand their search algorithms well enough to fix this? It's very weird, and everywhere.
