epicdemiologist,
@epicdemiologist@wandering.shop avatar

@Lizette603_23 Yup, also with my adult children and husband. We used to have a family rule of "no comedy routines at the table." Only one of the 3 grew up to be an actor, but they're all still hilarious.

epicdemiologist,

@StillIRise1963 I respectfully proffer a different viewpoint: For me, rest is an important task. I don't consider cooking to be doing nothing, and rest is at least as important to my health as eating.

My sister is a middle school teacher in GA. Something racist happened at the school and the white admin. handled it very well. They did all the right things. My sister says she’s never felt so supported at work anywhere in the nation. Good people are everything.

ABOUT DAMN TIME. (US) Hospitals must now receive informed patient consent for breast, pelvic, prostate and rectal exams performed by medical students -- particularly on anesthetized patients, the Department of Health and Human Services announced Monday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_48rOgNze9w

@gannet It gives me the creeps knowing that our OB-GYNs were trained on unconsenting, unconscious women. On a related note, I turned around and left without getting my most recently scheduled mammogram, because the hospital wanted me to basically sign a blank piece of paper. I'll take my chances with the breast cancer, thanks.

@staringatclouds @msquebanh Same. I've been to a couple of plays and concerts only because my (adult) kids were performing--husband and I were masked, but almost no one else was. No movies, indoor dining, etc. and I don't unmask at work receptions, so I don't eat.

@ddrake @ColinTheMathmo The problems aren't just related to cognition, vision, or learned expectations, either. For example, touch screens often don't register touches from older people's (dry) skin. This is a problem not only with phones and tablets, but with home appliances, cars and a myriad of other devices that have gone to touchscreen tech.

HeavenlyPossum, to random

Something I find fascinating is the way in which awful people seem to instinctively know how to be awful.

So like abusers tend to follow particular and predictable patterns for manipulating their victims. Groomers have these strategies for grooming. Fascists come to power in similar ways to each other. Con artists win their victims’ trust in ways remarkably similar to each other.

Do they all go to some evil villain school to learn these techniques? Or are some people just legitimately born with these instincts? I’m somewhere on the spectrum and I struggle to intuit basic social interactions, much less routinely manipulate them to my advantage.

How does that work?!

epicdemiologist,
@epicdemiologist@wandering.shop avatar

@HeavenlyPossum I think there's some selection bias here. There's a stock fraud where you "predict" ten or twenty stock moves in a row by making half "up" and half "down" predictions to a huge list of people, discarding the ones who got the wrong prediction. After multiple rounds you're left with a very short list of people who think you're a genius. We're seeing the psychopaths who won repeatedly. We're not seeing the ones who failed in the first few rounds and never got away with anything big.

epicdemiologist,
@epicdemiologist@wandering.shop avatar

@HeavenlyPossum I did read the 3 stories. All 3 of them succeeded repeatedly before they failed, which is why they were worth writing about. The dude who tries to convince a stranger he's the King of England's third cousin, and gets laughed out of town, doesn't get a story.

"Scabies is not the only disease that appears to be making a comeback in Rishi Sunak’s Britain. In 2022, 423 patients were admitted to English hospitals with rickets, a disease caused by lack of sunlight and inadequate levels of vitamin D. The same year, 188 people were treated for scurvy, a condition caused by not eating enough fresh fruit and vegetables, leading to a deficiency in vitamin C."
