i must have been 13 or 14, and i had to take a long-ish train trip by myself to visit my grandparents. so, mum had given me some money for sweets and tickets and left me at the train-station.

this was common at the time. what can i say, i'm old. different times.

anyway - i was looking in the magazine-section at the kiosk, and i came across a paperback edition of "the devil's dictionary" by ambrose bierce. i riffled a bit in it - and immediately decided to use all the left-over money on a book instead of sweets.

then i spent the train-trip giggling and enjoying the wit and snark of a master. i still treasure the memories of that trip.
