@grillchen Considering Pride is a political movement, that charities like Stonewall influence government and politics through guidance and awards. I forget the exact word for it. But how can it not be political when they have made it political? When they even ask for special privileges?
I would prefer my sexuality to not be used in this way partly because it makes me less safe and because it is not fair but what can I do? It doesn't represent me. I do not feel whatever they think I ought to while they do this.
@grillchen Or they think like the CEO of Disney, and they do not think that supporting Pride or LGBT is a political act. But foreign war policy clearly is.
The workers probably do also try to get away with as much as they can. Likely to be supporters themselves. These large corporations foster this environment, usually after driving out their talent which got them started.
I do not think it is a nice sign of support for me. But hopefully my perspective gives something extra for you to think about regardless of that.
@grillchen If they said that you are good for the economy then at least they were treating you equally to their other citizens. Governments now think in terms of the economy over anything else.
When I think about good representation, I think about stories where a character isn't treated like all they have to offer is their identity political class. That is all they represent and have to offer us. I have a preference for well-rounded characters that happen to be that. This is what I would rather get across in my stories. And explore the variety in that. The stuff you don't normally see.
I cringe at the whole representation, pride flags and rights and speeches. Sometimes this tokenism is painful to watch. It's so surface level.
@kaia@lain I mean, I assumed so but your guess is as good as mine here. I would think they are called ice buckets here. Then again, they had a redbull bucket. Are they bringing their own extra drinks?
@grillchen It's insane. It's like they cannot conceive that some people do need personal transportation to get around safely, to meet their needs or to travel longer distances.
@grillchen Yeah. I heard this excuse of a 15 minute city... but that only works if you don't live in a food desert or you can afford to eat out at nice places. Corner shops are not always the best places to get healthy, fresh produce.
I should also point out that there are disabled people that need a car to get around. Cities are not safe places to be for children or women, and when you end up with a bad area then that isn't good for them. You end up isolating many people inside because it isn't safe or accessible to go out. These are things that need to be addressed too.
Also, that could have fooled me because I live somewhere hostile to cars. Lost a lot of parking spaces and wild design choices for the roads. Then things like ULEZ. The pavements aren't really much better here, tripping hazards and all... they get potholes which gather as puddles.
@grillchen
>tbh one of the main reasons for that are cars right now...
I hate to say this but it is because of men. No getting around that one, especially late in the evening. That is when more crime happens, when they are more likely to be stalked, attacked, kidnapped or raped. Being able to get into a car and driving off can be a safety net for the women at least.
>i never saw a place in a city where a supermarket was more than 10 minutes away
I have heard stories about the US... I am not kidding about food deserts being a thing.
>i think we drastically need to improve public transportation.
I'm not sure how much you can improve it to make it safe and accessible.
But I do appreciate that you would rather people preferred public transport because it is the better option rather than making cars worse.
@sun@grillchen I don't know why this suggestion amuses me so much. I think it has been a thing. On saying this, you can't have them being female-only because of trans women rights now. Even if this is abused by criminals.
You have problems, I have problems too. I also think this dumpster fire of a country is going to collapse soon. But unlike you I don't have youth or health anymore, so I am mega-fucked when it happens, unlike you.
