Thought for sure McLaren made the wrong call there and Hamilton would fly by. But very impressed by Lando there. He earned that 2nd place. Hopefully they can keep this up.
I still maintain it was the wrong call. It only worked because Lando drove perfectly. If Lando made even the slightest mistake, he would have lost that position.
Expecting your driver to be prefect is not the right call.
Stella said on C4 that they intended to go for the hards because of the vsc, but the full safety changed things, however they didn’t have time to then get the soft tyres ready in the pits. Basically there was a higher chance of losing positions by the time lost switching to softs in the pit lane.
I thought it was fairly obvious that the vsc would turn full based on where the car stopped so that was still a small error on their part, but yeah, there’s always lots of things to take into account and it’s not always a simple x or y decision.
I was honestly a little confused when it turned out to be a VSC. I figured the way it was stopped on the straight there was no way Marshalls could retrieve it safely.
My comment even said safety car when I saw the car stopped, and I’d hit post before the virtual part came up
Spoiling races was the one thing I hoped we would leave with Reddit. I mean, considering the current state of F1 Max winning isn’t really a surprise. That doesn’t make it okay. When/if Lemmy supports Spoiler tags, I hope we can enforce this rules for at least the first 24 hours after a race.
There’s no “staying off the board” it pops up on your feed when you’re subscribed. It’s like you don’t know how many of this works. The only way to avoid it is to unsubscribe. Which I did.
Get an VPN & F1TV... I'm in the UK but I refuse to give a penny to Murdoch & the channel 4 coverage is compromised of course.
Getting F1TV has completely revolutionised my F1 watching. Being able to watch easily, with time shift if needed, & no streaming stress. The commentary is even better imho (though you can choose the Sky feed if you miss Martin & Crofty). The pundits are better too. And you can watch any in car view at any time. It's worth every penny.
Overall I have lost interest. After the title was stolen from Lewis I was pretty bitter. I have been watching for about 15 years (American) and this year is just incredibly boring. This is by far the most dominant car I have ever seen and no one can challenge Max, not even his teammate. At least when Lewis was winning all the time he had a competent teammate to challenge every weekend.
Great race overall, probably equally as good as the Austria Sprint.
McLaren was the headliner and Norris rightly got all the plaudits for an amazing drive, but it’s a shame more fuss hasn’t been raised about Piastri. He would most likely have had a podium if not for the unlucky safety car and continues to show that the hype was not unwarranted. It’s going to be very interesting to see what he can do in a car that can actually perform.
Aston continues to struggle, though this track was never going to be suited for them, and Stroll delivered a patented yo-yo performance by following up a solid showing in Austria by being very poor today. Alonso did what he could and displayed some great defensive positioning, but 7th was probably the best they could hope for here. Hungary should be a good track for Aston and so that’s when we’ll get a true measure of how far behind the pack they’ve fallen.
Shambolic race weekend by Ferrari, though their car seemed just awful here. Wasn’t fast enough on the medium and couldn’t get temps into the hards.
Not much to say about Red Bull, I feel like we’ve seen this race multiple times already this season from them. It was nice seeing Max at least briefly involved in battles, but otherwise it was another comfortable victory for him while Perez fucked his quali and executed an unremarkable bare-minimum recovery drive.
Shout-out to two drivers who will be forgotten this race. Gasly was doing really well until his car did an Alpine got Strolled, so it’s unfortunate he probably won’t get any credit, and finally a solid race by Sargent, but he didn’t get any points so I imagine nobody will have noticed.
EDIT: thanks eroc1990 for pointing out the contact with Stroll was harder than I caught live and so Stroll was probably more to blame than Alpine.
It looked like it to me. The clip starts here on the race highlights. Once Stroll returns to within track limits, it looks like direct wheel to wheel with harder contact on the rear right, which seems to have been what caused the suspension to break. at ~6:43 they show the onboard from Gasly’s view and it was hard enough to jolt him, and only after Stroll made contact did the Alpine begin to crab.
We’ve just put a small mod team together, we’ll get some sidebar rules up shortly, currently we’ll remove anything offensive or off topic and assess other types of posts on their own merit
If I may suggest, I think many here would prefer shitposting to be kept to Formuladank, so maybe putting a link to that community in the sidebar would help direct people there?
Maybe for the future use a generic title and have the results table/image attached? Something like “Austria Grand Prix 2023 Results”. Just until we get spoiler tags.
I’m going to have to leave this community. Living in the US I watch these races on time delay. If mods are going to spoil races like this in my feed, I’m out.
I think if Lemmy supports spoiler tags it shouldn’t be an issue to use them, but just to understand… why would you come here if you did not see the race yet?
No it has the spoilers in the sidebar. You know, that thing you see next to every post. Besides that, the F1 subreddit posts always a graphic with the race winner, the same graphic you see in the… sidebar!
It’s also far easier for someone who doesn’t want to be spoiled to simply avoid places where spoilers are likely, than moderate thousands of other people to follow such a rule.
I saw the spoiler post title at the top of the front page of my instance. So I’ll have to unsubscribe or even filter the community. Sure. But that’s pretty annoying when we could easily just not post race results in post titles. I don’t understand why y’all get so bitter about a reasonable ask.
I popped into Lemmy for a few minutes while using the facilities this morning. An F1 spoiler was the second post in my feed. How about we not post spoilers in the title. It’s really not a big ask.
Might it be possible to put spoiler warnings in the headline? This showed up in my /all feed and I was going to watch the highlights on TV this evening
I had the season written off for Red Bull before it even began, and we’ve now seen 4 different race winners in 8 races. Hopefully the competitiveness continues.
Happy to see Gasly and Albon finally score points.
