Just dropped C$27 on @thunderbird (net to Tbird $25) because there's only two ways to get the bugs/features that aren't red hot done: do it yourself, or pay someone else to work on them. I went for option B.

@abivia We seriously appreciate both your donation and your appreciation. We proud to be driven by donations like yours and the values described on our website.

@abivia @thunderbird good luck getting them to fix bugs instead of polluting everything with ai features that nobody wants or needs

@deshipu @thunderbird Care to share an alternative that isn't? Or even a new feature that's unwanted?

Mozilla has spun Tbird off into it's own subsidiary, hopefully somewhat isolated from the cerebral failures in Mozilla proper.
From the tbird site: "Thunderbird is funded by user donations. We don’t collect personal data, sell ads in your inbox, or secretly train AI with your private conversations."

@abivia @thunderbird I don't really have a ready solution. It would be nice to have some control over how our donations are used, but it's usually set up in a way that makes it impossible. Personally I just try to use (very old) projects that are not controlled by any corporation or foundation, but that's not a good solution for everybody. I wish I could recommend something for general population.

@deshipu And that's the problem, it's a question of finding the thing that sucks the least for your individual tastes.

My experience has been that the Tbird team is doing okay, considering the amount of resources they have available. Firefox is another matter. My daily driver is Waterfox, which strips out most of the stuff I didn't want in the first place while retaining the core of FF.

@abivia @thunderbird

But how long will it continue?

Originally it wasn't such a big problem, because you could always run the older version of the software, or compile your own with the unwanted features disabled. But projects like Firefox worked around this by requiring a datacenter, a doctorate, and two weeks of free time to even compile their software, and by not backporting security fixes to the older versions.

@deshipu The Waterfox folks seem to manage to pull it off, so I guess the answer is as long as sufficient funds roll in, which cycles back to why I sent the Tbird folks some money.
