VirtualOdour,

Your post was very clear, lemmy has a reading comprehension problem.

You clearly mean that’s the reason the local government did it, not that you think they’re right.

VirtualOdour,

Yet we had a big thread with everyone saying it was a conspiracy

VirtualOdour,

Yeah which creates a division where all sane and sensible visions of sexuality are forbidden leaving only more extreme depictions from porn focused sites which race to extremes.

I think it’s an unhealthy approach, we need sensible and loving eroticism to serve as a good example otherwise all we have is the absurdity of porn - I’m no prude and not al all against fetish porn or whatever as long as it’s consensual and safe but objectification and extremism don’t make healthy relationships or happy lives (not say they can’t be part of a great relationship but they dont work as the basis for it)

VirtualOdour,

They’re working on that, the easiest bits come first and creativity is easier than ordered thinking and data analysis. People with diminished brain function often use art as therapy and create very creative things, they never analyze and compare datasets for therapy though…

Image gen is a huge part of making useful tools, what we see as the final product- an image generator is actually just a side product of teaching CV to recognize items and apply human labels, this is what will allow you to tell it ‘look for red shoes with funky tassels’ and it can do it for items not tagged with those descriptions. Plus a million other really useful things, like ‘watch granny for signs of distress’ without having to explain yes having her hand caught in a loom is distressing.

Also current ai are mostly toys because it’s safer to practice and explore toys than tools, it won’t be long before you’re saying ‘you kids don’t know about old search, you had to know she what you were looking for and where it should be…’

VirtualOdour,

They are, look at modem factory or mine they’re full of robotics, now injuries are incredibly low and many of the most dangerous jobs are as safe as a well run office

We’re in a big transition as new technologies are developed, it’s going to take time but there are are some huge things coming soon - llms and cv are enabling fsctory toolarms to leave the factory so expect cooking arms, repair arms, construction arms, micro factories bringing manufacturing back to local markets… sure it sucks we don’t have it now but don’t hate the early stages of it just because it’s not finished yet.

VirtualOdour,

Because those are great ways of exploring and working with things like image analysis and item identification - they seem like the only thing that exists from a consumer point of view but the reality is they’re off shoots of developing more significant tools and mathematical understanding.

Think of it like Newton, he invented a desktop toy and a window decoration for hippys- his life in terms of products to market is laughablely insignificant, totally reduculous. However by laying the groundwork of modern science in optics and physics he demonstrated methods that could be used to totally revolutionize pretty much every part of life.

Natural language computing is hugely significant, it removes so many class and economic barriers while also benefitting us in the developed world almost as much. We’re going to start seeing ai integrated into sites like Amazon soon alowing you to describe the product you want and actually get search results that match, sounds insignificant but it’s a hugely difficult problem and could have a big effect on things. ‘Answering a A vase suitable for this flower’ or ‘a power adaptor to work with this device’ is a couple of orders more complex than creating a poem about robot ninja.

VirtualOdour, (edited )

Because he wants to stop it from helping impoverished people live better lives and all the other advantages simply because it didn’t exist when.he was young and change scares him

VirtualOdour,

Everything always has to make things worse for people, why do no experts ever urge anything but screwing over the poor?

What about subsidies on healthier options? What about reworking rules to help create pathways for low cost healthy snacks and sustaining foods? How about a program that enables people to have affordable or free access to locally grown produce? Fund development of platforms and technologies to improve awareness and access to healthy food?

Nope. The affluent experts decide to push something that won’t affect them but will make life harder for everyone already struggling.

VirtualOdour,

Studies seem to show they make everything worse for the cause; politicians distance themselves from causes, public make emotional associations which are hard to break, etc.

Certainly the affect in conversation is obvious, people see attacks on art or blocking roads, etc as anti-social behavior and this locks their brain into thinking of them as a socially destructive force which of course taints their thinking of the cause.

I’ve attended lectures on it at climate protest events, how those tactics can be useful for situations no one is talking about but harmful to well known things - but there were very few people interested, the reality is hard work and learning isn’t fun. Playing hero and living in a self agrandizing fantasy however is fun, especially when you can use it to boost your socials, justify immorality, and all the other things people use religion or extreme politics for.

VirtualOdour,

I agree, either floating stuff into neighboring countries is fine or it’s not.

‘Oh we were sending illegal stuff into your country but it’s OK because we’re the good guys’ is something both sides would say so our media supporting one and deriding the other is silly - and yes they both say they’re sending good things and the enemy is sending bad things.

New FPS Built Using Doom Tech Is Better Than Most AAA Shooters (kotaku.com)

Things aren’t looking good for me. I’m a few levels into Selaco, a new FPS out now on Steam, and I’m stuck behind a bar as a group of sci-fi soldiers unload their rifles and shotguns into my hiding spot. I’m also low on health. So yeah, a bad spot to be in. I take a deep breath and try something....

VirtualOdour,

Yeah, I think also worth remembering that people love games that serious gamers consider beneath them. I love indy games but I also understand why AAA games are fun, simple handholding game play is great sometimes.

VirtualOdour,

Yes like in America gun violence never happens because everyone has guns.

Hmmm

VirtualOdour,

People who actually care see Biden working to mitigate the problems in Isreal without being totally knee-jerk and making everything much worse - just letting all the jews die is not going to make things better, yes I understand that a small portion of the loud left want this but most the country recognizes its far worse than the current situation and things are super complex. Just pulling funding from Isreal is not an option that any but a very small and extreme portion of the country want, the reality is Biden position is fairly popular and even sided.

And again it is only the very very extreme left who want open boarders, most the left support border controls to some extent. Biden has hugely reduced deportation while Trump wants ‘the biggest deportation operation in history’ Biden allowed the building of a wall Trump started and hasn’t built more, has fought to make boarders less aggressive and to provide help for those at boarders. Biden also ended family separation at the border. Saying they’re the same because neither are extreme anti-boarder is just disingenuous.

The reality is soft on boarders or hard on Isreal would lose more votes than it wins.

VirtualOdour,

Surely item 8623 in the list of reasons no sane person would vote for him will convince them!

The reality is people voting gop don’t care about women, they certainly don’t care about porn stars - they see this as a political stunt involving a fallen women who of course would lie to hurt their hero. The actual crime of fraud is meaningless to them, they’ve convinced themselves it’s more evidence the dems are corrupt and evil so it’ll only harden their resolve.

Vote and convince people the importance of voting, it really is very important. If they win gop will use this as a mandate to ensure ‘dem political corruption can never happen again’ which involves reversing decisions, packing courts, introducing crazy rules and protections for their own corruption, and likely attacking all the ‘many arms of dem corruption’ from artifa to NPR.

VirtualOdour,

So a British kid got paid by the Russians to burn down a Ukrainian businessmans warehouse? That’s pretty dumb, and kinda scary. Is this going to be the start of freelance darkweb mercenaries paid by belligerent states to sabotage their home country? I hope not because the added security they’d bring in to try and stop it would make life much harder for all of us.

VirtualOdour,

It’s slang you’d hear 50 years ago in the east end and Essex. You’ll only really hear it used by gangsters in movies these days or someone putting on the accent for laughs, possibly from an old geezer, you certainly won’t hear it used by respectable establishments or family friendly media. It’s not generally considered offensive but is considered uncouth.

VirtualOdour,

And you try don’t get too close and inhale it

VirtualOdour,

I think people overlook how much of the internet Google helped create too, I kinda feel for them fighting against endless scammers, manipulators, gifters, etc. They’ve made a lot of peoples lives easier without charging them for it, this disproportionately helps poorer people more especially tools like maps, translate, and search.

VirtualOdour,

I hope you’re aware how inaccurate and biased almost all of it is then

VirtualOdour,

This is a headline that idiots have been reposting forever without context - they’re taking about IN THE GAME

VirtualOdour,

Over a decade of knee-jerk gamers responding without reading the article, how time flies

It’s stuff like this getting flung around that helps me remember no one cares about reality

VirtualOdour,

Yes, a lot of the games you can get medals.

Have you never played a game?

VirtualOdour,

Exactly, they’d know a lot more accurately what happened too, which raises another point as to why no one comes back here - imagine gong somewhere that you know horrible things are happening to children but you can’t say anything or save them because of the timeline…

Even if in the unlikely event Hawking didn’t know about it talking to him and not saying ‘that friend of yours epstine is a bad dude’ would be unbearable.

VirtualOdour,

This really is the lemmy mentality summed up.

Yes you’re smarter than Google and the only one who really understands ai… smh

VirtualOdour,

Ai is already hugely useful and will continue to get more useful as the tech evolves. I know that change upsets you but the reality is you were not born at the highpoint of humanity or the endpoint of history.

It’s going to make the world better for a lot of people just like the internet did despite the endless assertions that it was a gmick, scam, and mistake from people who were likely your age now when the internet was emerging.

The funniest thing to me is seeing this community which holds people like Aaron Swartz up as a hero demand the exact opposite of everything he believed in and fought for. Information wants to be free - you want to lock every piece in perpetual impenetrable copyright just to halt the development of tech.
