Watched The Shining in the theater. You guys may not know this, but movies are often better if you watch them in a theater from start to finish instead of bits and pieces on TV out of order with commercial breaks.

One of the features in Mastodon you may not be aware of; When someone says something stupid, weird, inscrutable, or inflammatory you can just completely ignore them.

It's really weird that all these companies have gone so hard for "AI". Weird and concerning.

It's certainly not for our benefit.

The Northridge earthquake is so embedded in me I flinch every time I see it's Jan 17th.

I've crashed cars, had guns put in my face, all kinds of things, but nothing comes close to that.

I was in the SF Valley just off Ventura. When it happened it didn't even occur to me that it was an earthquake, it felt like the building or the world was exploding. It was so loud I think I woke up screaming but my wife right next to me said she didn't hear me.

I'm wondering why I see people with all these bikepacking setups and they don't use racks. So I look it up and people have some points pro and con, but the main takeaway seems to be that bags with no rack are harder to use but people think they look cooler.

This seems to be the deal with most modern mountain biking trends and gear.

SMH.

(I also think it looks kind of weird and dumb)

Turn on CNN for election results and they have giant banners stating how poorly Biden is supposedly doing in the polls.

Biden is not up for election.

The media is in on it.

I can't figure out why online articles are always recommending Elementary OS as "the best Linux for switching from Mac".

I kept thinking maybe they'd never used Elementary or a Mac, but that doesn't always seem to be the case.

I think one of biggest issues with the Federated Universe in general is that many people who are big fans, and people who’ve been around a long time, are at odds with the actual structure and soul of the thing without realizing it.

Some people need highly specific, heavily filtered instances that fit them perfectly, and they should have it. Many people do not, and want something more like old twitter or other social media, and they should have it too.

Here's a mystery for you; I bought some Levi's 501 shrink to fit jeans last year. Lately I've been sitting there and pulled out little rubbery threads.

I thought I had been caught out by the fact that almost all jeans now have elastic in them (boo-hiss) but the label says "100% cotton".

I don't know if it's labeling, they're lying, or little rubbery threads are somehow getting embedded in my jeans. But also, why would they be coming out?

I now feel like there could be a market for electric car conversions, and I know lots of people have thought about it.

There are probably a fair amount of people who have a car and don't want the complication and ridiculous privacy invasion of new cars.

How tech conversations go in 2024;

"This thing is aggressively harmful, it hurts people, wastes resources, is generally bad for society, etc."

"Yes, but it also does something mildly amusing but completely unnecessary that no one asked for, so it's a trade off. Tough decision"

Actually this is how all business discussion go in 2024. People have become completely brainwashed by business.

Saw Adam Ant and The English Beat in Phoenix. Great show, both great bands.

The thing about seeing these older acts is they almost always end up with really great musicians backing them.

Half the people in Adam's band looked the part, and half of them looked like they just came in from the Keith Urban gig, but they did rock and apparently it's been mostly the same band for a while.

Without the internet and social media in particular, I would have no idea how weird people are, and how many weird people there are out there.
