How do so many people still have DECT phones for ?

I've searched through all my junk drawers, in the loft, and in the Big Crates Of Useful Things - but I can only find old GSM phones.

I don't even think I have anything with a BS 6312 431A plug 😮‍💨

@Edent psst bring a GSM phone maybe https://gsm.emf.camp/

@Edent wait until you're on-site :)

you ever do that thing where there's some property or behaviour you're generally aware of but generally just ignore as not being particularly consequential, and then you design something where that property is a limiting factor, so you study it in a lot of detail and then become cursed with the knowledge that you really should be accounting for it pretty much everywhere

@callum_snowden@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland as in the current when you first turn a thing on and it charges all the caps? I guess it's pretty stressful on the caps?

Anyone have recommendations for a good Windows 10 debloating tool? Setting up a new workstation and don't want all the crap on there.

It feels like it has been a Very Long Day, so of course the best idea is to come home and start thinking about PCB layouts...

callum_snowden,
@callum_snowden@mastodon.social avatar

Well so far it's going well

callum_snowden,
@callum_snowden@mastodon.social avatar

@revk ah very similar! I'm using it as an excuse to use up some scrap stainless steel at work to make a little grid divider for it

callum_snowden,
@callum_snowden@mastodon.social avatar

@revk where did you find them, LCSC/Aliexpress? That's pretty bloody small!

I've gone for the typical 5x5 or whatever size it is as each "pixel" is going to be 10mm square as its intended to sit on my desk and look pretty

OMAIGOOOOOOOD

It lits up!

DISCLAIMER: It's on arduino, and I am following a tutorial, but still lits up!!!!

Far from dogything useful yet, bit this relieves so much frustration...

callum_snowden,
@callum_snowden@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland @Nixie the ssd1305 on those is a chip-on-glass, no? The breakout boards just connect the appropriate bootstrap, interface and power supply pins so it's not terribly complicated to design into a thing.

callum_snowden,
@callum_snowden@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland @Nixie yeah! From memory when I last designed a board for one of those type displays, there's like 2 voltage rails, reset, two bootstrap pins, all the stuff for i2c and spi and a lot of grounds

callum_snowden,
@callum_snowden@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland @Nixie I looked at a datasheet for a different display using the same controller (a Midas displays one with a 28-pin ribbon) and that breaks out all the parallel bus too, but depending on the bootstrap pins it'll just use a few for I2C

just scored an 18000fps 2048x2 / 4096x1 colour industrial line camera for £20, sold as "for parts or not working" but actually just untested because the recycling company doesn't know how to power it.

I found the manual on Teledyne's website and it's got the power pinout (just 12V/GND on a locking DIN). data is gigabit ethernet, and the controller software is a free download.

if it works flawlessly, it's a tidy sum. if it's partly faulty (e.g. dead pixels), I bet I can find a use for it.

callum_snowden,
@callum_snowden@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland are they the teledyne cube ones that CDL had? 👀

callum_snowden,
@callum_snowden@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland ebay seller called Computer Disposals Ltd, an IT recycling company based in the northwest. Funnily enough they had exactly the same cameras and I nearly bid on one but didn't for lack of knowing what to do with it...

callum_snowden,
@callum_snowden@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland they've not had any particularly interesting shite for a while, seems to have gone downhill a bit since being taken over by Restore Technology

just remembered the time I bought a high power fog machine second hand off a guy, who didn't tell me that it'd been sat in a shed for over two years, with fluid still in it.

I, of course, made the mistake of testing it indoors. the house stunk like a fish's rectum for a couple of days.

@gsuberland I started discovering more stuff by listening to Radio 1 Dance and it opened my eyes to the amount of great stuff out there
