Continuing my series of “you saw what movie with your mom?!,” I took my mom to see Challengers today. We had a great time and mom is now a certified Zendaya stan. She wants to see it again. She also loved the soundtrack.

@film_girl My mom took me to see Private Benjamin when I was 7, Tootsie when I was 9, and Amadeus when I was 11.

I’m currently watching a movie with Jack Nicholson, Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, and Peter Lorre. I’ve seen it before, but still love it.

@agiletortoise The Raven? Loved that movie but haven’t seen it in years.

So excited about this. One of the worst tech patents ever is now dead. I have fought this patent for 4+ years. I was the expert witness in two cases, most recently in NC. Non-practicing trolls are the worst. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/04/how-landmark-technologys-terrible-patent-has-survived @eff

@shanselman @eff The head of the USPTO sounds corrupt. I once received a patent infringement notification about downloading software on the Internet in the mid 2000s. I ignored it and they never came back. I assume they sent one to a deep pocketed company that chose to fight them.

@agiletortoise Bet it all disappeared, too!

I never realised before now that you can drag the compose button away from the right on @mammoth and it fills the bottom of the screen. Cool.

Does that happen in all apps with a floating button? Or is this specific? 🙂

A video showing the compose button being dragged to the centre of the screen where it expands to fill the width.

eliajf,
@eliajf@hachyderm.io avatar

@matt That’d be a Mammoth feature. That floating button is not a specific iOS feature although it is used a lot by developers. I believe that was originally an Android Material Design concept, actually. (The button itself in the lower, right corner, not the expanding aspect of it. I hadn’t seen that before.)

This is the first iOS app I ever wrote. It went live in the store July 4, 2009. It’s a Pharmacokinetics calculator.

My brother, a PharmD, and I paired to do all the math, he and I worked on the UI and I wrote the code.

It’s still in the store for $2.99. I get a sale every once in a while.

I’d love to give this app a big refresh and add a bunch of new calculation formulas and support some additional calculation types.

@fahrni That’s how we met! Been reading NA doccassionally responding to your random Twitter/Mastodon posts ever since!

eliajf,
@eliajf@hachyderm.io avatar

@fahrni Yeah. Apple made me remove it from the App Store. A licensed pharmacologist wrote all the calculations, too. My years developing for iOS were not always happy ones.

eliajf,

@fahrni PowerOne is still available but I never released the medical calculations again.

I want to make a Wirecutter for . Like, this is very best app for X purpose. (no games) Anyone want to start a new media pub with me? (Just kidding lol but I sorta want this to exist)

eliajf,
@eliajf@hachyderm.io avatar

@Sarahp @bens I love this idea and thought about it before but… the business model. Most obvious is referral revenue to the apps themselves but don’t think Apple gives referrals on apps anymore. Have you thought about this?

eliajf,

@Sarahp @bens Fair enough! 😀

So, I tried Vision Pro, and no matter how good you think it is… it's better. Just astonishing immersion backed by mind-boggling audio fidelity, and the UI has been polished and polished until it's almost invisible. Zero friction; I was a confident user in minutes.

eliajf,
@eliajf@hachyderm.io avatar

@twostraws All I’ve been thinking about for two days is what masters Apple is at releasing products in steps over years before releasing the actual products they intend. Amazes me every time.

Swift Macros seem amazing and really speak to me as a programming nerd. But if I empathize with beginning programmers even for a second, I'm horrified. Swift has spiraled inexorably into impossible to understand territory. I used to defend it as a beginner's language but it's harder and harder to do so.

eliajf,
@eliajf@hachyderm.io avatar

@danielpunkass I regularly work in three different languages so try to keep me usage of deep language features to a minimum. Swift is killing me.
